The ground is the original state of every living being. It is not something new that you must make. Instead, it is already inside you. It exists before time begins. Some call this the primordial state.

This ground is like a pure, clear mind. It is often compared to a crystal. Many thinkers say this ground is always pure. It is also called "Great Primordial Purity."

The ground has three parts that work together. They are like a mirror.

The first part is the essence. This part is pure and empty. The second part is the nature. This part shows things, like a mirror shows images. The third part is compassion. This part is like a special energy or love. These three parts cannot be split apart. One master said the ground is like a "groundless ground." This means it is the base for everything, but it has no fixed shape of its own. Finding this ground is how people reach awakening.

In the Dzogchen tradition, people study a concept called the ground.

This ground is the original state of every living being. It is an essential part of both the Bon tradition and the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. Some thinkers call it the primordial state or the original ground. This state exists before the difference between enlightened beings and others. It is described as being outside of time itself. Because it is beyond time, words like "original" are just ways to help us understand.

The ground is a pure, empty consciousness. Recognizing this ground is the way to reach awakening.

The ground works in a way that is very special. It is not a thing that you have to build or create. Instead, it is something that is already present in everyone. It is described as a "groundless ground" by some teachers. This means it acts as a base for everything, but it has no fixed shape. It is also called "Great Primordial Purity." This purity means it is free from ignorance or any kind of cloudiness. It is a state that is always there, even if people do not notice it.

Many people believe this ground is the true nature of reality.

History shows us many important people who wrote about this idea. Longchenpa was a Tibetan master who lived from 1308 to 1364. He described the ground in great detail. Another teacher named Jigme Lingpa also linked this idea to Buddha-nature. In the 8th century, Vimalamitra wrote a famous commentary. He called the ground the "unfabricated mind." This means the mind is not something put together from other parts. Later, Namkhai Norbu lived from 1938 to 2018 and wrote about the ground too. He explained that the ground is the same for the whole universe and for each person.

There are three main parts of the ground that work together. These are often called the "three wisdoms."

The first part is the essence, which is described as being ever-pure. The second part is the nature, which is also called "natural perfection." This part is like a mirror's ability to show reflections. The third part is compassion, which is seen as a special kind of energy. These three parts are interdependent and cannot be separated. They are like the different qualities of a single mirror. One part cannot exist without the others.

You can think about these ideas using things you already know. For example, the nature of the ground is like a mirror's capacity to reflect images. The essence is like the emptiness that allows a mirror to work. The compassion part is like the way light might move or play. Some people use a crystal prism to explain how energy shows up. A prism can take white light and turn it into many colors. This helps show how one ground can lead to many different appearances. Even with these examples, teachers say the ground is hard to describe with just words.

In the Dzogchen tradition, the concept of the "ground" is central to understanding existence.

This ground, or primordial state, refers to the original state of any sentient being. It is a fundamental component for both the Bon tradition and the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. The ground is described as an atemporal and unchanging state. This means it exists outside the constraints of time. While terms like "original" or "primordial" are used, these are merely conventional labels. They do not refer to a specific point in history. Instead, they indicate a state where time is not a factor. The ground is a pure, empty consciousness that must be recognized to achieve awakening.

The mechanism of the ground involves a complex relationship between consciousness and appearance. It is described as a "groundless ground" by the master Longchenpa. This suggests that while it acts as a base for reality, it has no intrinsic nature of its own. The ground is "noetically potent," meaning it has the power to give rise to various states. It results in the production of mind, consciousness, delusion, and knowledge. This process is not a creation of something new. Rather, it is the manifestation of what is already present. The ground is not a transpersonal entity or a single, fixed thing. It is described as one's "unfabricated mind," meaning it is not constructed from parts.

Scholars and practitioners identify three interdependent aspects of the ground, often called the "three wisdoms."

These aspects are inseparable, much like the various qualities of a mirror. The first aspect is the Essence (ngowo), which is defined by original purity (ka dag). This purity refers to emptiness, or being free from extremes. The second aspect is the Nature (rangshyin), also known as Natural Perfection or spontaneous presence. This is the luminous aspect of the ground. The third aspect is Compassion (tukjé), which is also called Energy. It is the manifest ground of arising. These three parts function together as a single, unified reality.

The history of these ideas traces back to Indian Buddha-nature theory. In the 8th century, Vimalamitra wrote the "Great Commentary," defining the ground as the unfabricated mind. Later, Tibetan masters like Longchenpa (1308–1364) and Jigme Lingpa expanded these views. They specifically linked the Dzogchen ground to the concept of Buddha-nature, or sugatagarbha. In the modern era, teachers such as Namkhai Norbu (1938–2018) continued this work. Norbu explained that the ground is the same at both the universal and individual levels. He noted that this self-perfected state remains hidden due to the illusion of dualism.

Understanding the significance of the ground requires looking at its specific qualities. The essence is associated with the Dharmakaya and the Buddha. The nature is linked to the Saṃbhogakāya and the Dharma. Compassion is associated with the Nirmanakaya and the Sangha. These connections show that the three jewels are fully included in every being. The ground is described as "Great Primordial Purity" (ka dag chen po). This is considered the only flawless description according to various Dzogchen Tantras. It is a state that exists before authentic Buddhas or impure beings ever appeared.

To deepen understanding, teachers use various metaphors for the ground.

The essence is compared to the emptiness that allows a mirror to reflect any image. The nature is compared to the mirror's actual capacity to reflect. For the energy of compassion, a crystal prism is often used. A prism can refract white light into many different forms of light. This illustrates how the ground manifests as various appearances. One manifestation of compassion is called gDang, which is an infinite, formless radiance. Another is rol pa, which refers to manifestations that seem internal to an individual. The final is rTsal, which is the manifestation of energy as the external world.

The ground relates to broader philosophical discussions regarding monism and dualism. It is not defined as "one thing" like the concept of Brahman, because it allows for the production of diversity. It is also distinct from the "all-basis" (kun gzhi), which is considered a samsaric mode of consciousness. The ground is an unobstructed and omnipresent state of reality. It serves as the fundamental basis for all entities and individuals. While it is the basis of all, it is an insubstantial state. It remains the underlying reality that connects the individual to the universe.
