Grimms' Fairy Tales is a famous collection of stories from Germany.
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm worked very hard to gather these tales. They did not just make the stories up themselves. Instead, they collected oral tales that people told to each other. They also looked through many old books to find them. They asked friends and acquaintances in Kassel to share stories. The brothers wanted to preserve German history and culture. They believed that old stories were a pure way to show a nation's spirit.
The brothers had a very difficult life while they were growing up. Their father died when Jacob was only eleven years old. This meant the family lost their main source of money. Jacob had to become the head of the household to help. Later, their mother also passed away in 1808. To support their family, the brothers studied for many hours every day. They even studied more than twelve hours a day at school. This hard work helped them eventually go to the University of Marburg.
The first book was published on December 20, 1812.
These stories have inspired many different kinds of people. Many artists have made beautiful illustrations for the books. Artists like Arthur Rackham and Walter Crane created famous pictures.
Grimms' Fairy Tales is a landmark collection of German stories.
The collection was built through a careful process of gathering and editing. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm did not invent these stories from scratch. Instead, they acted as collectors of oral traditions. They gathered tales by talking to friends and acquaintances in Kassel. They also searched through many old books for forgotten stories. Their goal was to write a history of old German Poesie. They wanted to preserve the linguistic and historical roots of their culture. This method turned spoken words into a permanent written record.
The collection changed significantly through many different editions. The first volume was published on December 20, 1812, with 86 stories. A second volume containing 70 more tales followed in 1815. Over time, the brothers added and removed stories to refine the corpus. By the seventh edition in 1857, the collection had expanded to 210 tales. They also included 10 "Children's Legends" in this final version. Some later editions also featured beautiful illustrations. These were created by artists like Philipp Grot Johann and Anton Robert Leinweber.
The brothers' lives were shaped by significant personal hardship. Their father, a district magistrate, died of pneumonia in 1796. This left the family without financial support. Jacob was only eleven when he had to lead the household. Later, their mother died in 1808, adding more struggle to their lives. To secure their future, the brothers became incredibly industrious students. They studied for more than twelve hours every day at the Lyzeum in Kassel.
At the University of Marburg, the brothers encountered influential mentors. Professor Friedrich Carl von Savigny became a major professional influence. He was the founder of the historical school of law. Jacob even served as an assistant to Savigny in Paris for one year. During this time, the brothers developed a deep interest in folklore. They used Savigny's personal library to study German law and history. This academic background helped them approach their storytelling with scholarly precision.
As the editions progressed, the content of the stories was modified. Early critics argued the tales were not suitable for children. The subject matter was sometimes too complex or too dark. To address this, the brothers made specific changes in later versions. They replaced wicked mothers with stepmothers in stories like Snow White. Some scholars believe this change was made because they held motherhood sacred. They also removed certain sexual references to make the tales more appropriate.
The influence of the Grimms extends across many different fields. Their work inspired other famous collectors of folklore around the world. This included Alexander Afanasyev in Russia and Joseph Jacobs in England. Many artists, such as Arthur Rackham and Walter Crane, created famous illustrations for them. The tales have even been used by writers to process historical trauma. For example, Jane Yolen used the tales in her writing about the Holocaust. The collection remains a foundational piece of global culture and imagination.
