Greater Poland is often called the "cradle of Poland." It formed the heart of the early Polish state in the 10th century. Poznań and Gniezno were early centers of royal power. These cities held Poland's oldest diocese and archdiocese. They played a vital role in the Christianization of the country.

In the 1130s, the region faced devastation from pagan rebellion. An invasion by Bretislaus I of Bohemia also occurred in 1038. Later, Casimir the Restorer moved the capital from Gniezno to Kraków. The region later saw many different administrative changes. It was once divided into the Poznań and Kalisz voivodeships.

History brought many periods of foreign control to the region. During the Partitions of Poland, Prussia took control of parts of the land. The second partition in 1793 saw the whole region absorbed by Prussia. This became the province of South Prussia. The Greater Poland Uprising of 1806 helped create the Napoleonic Duchy of Warsaw. However, the Congress of Vienna in 1815 partitioned the land again. The western part went to Prussia as the Grand Duchy of Posen.

After World War I, a successful uprising in 1918 ensured the region joined the new Polish state. During World War II, Nazi Germany occupied the area. They established the Reichsgau Wartheland. This was a very difficult time for the Polish population. Many people faced imprisonment, execution, or forced labor.

Natural resources drive much of the local economy. The region contains important mineral energy resources. These include lignite, natural gas, oil, and peat. Brown coal is mined in the Konin area.

Elektrownia Pątnów.jpg
This coal supports the Pątnów-Adams-Konin power stations. These stations provide over 10% of Poland's national electricity. Rock salt is also mined intensively in Kłodawa. This single mine produces about 20% of Poland's domestic salt. In Kościan, a natural gas site is currently in operation. This site could provide local gas independence for about 20 years.

The climate is influenced by oceanic air masses. This makes the weather relatively mild. The climate becomes more continental as you travel east. The average annual temperature is about 8.2 °C. The growing season is one of the longest in Poland. In the southern plains, it lasts around 228 days. This long season is good for agriculture. About 60% of the province has fertile soil. However, the eastern part faces a rainfall deficit. Some areas see only 450 mm of rain per year. This could lead to steppization of the land.

Water systems and transport connect the province to the rest of the country. Most surface water, about 88%, drains into the Warta river basin. The remaining 12% flows through other systems like the Barycz.
