Today, the Great Dividing Range is vital to Australian life and industry. Many large cities are located on or near the upland areas. These include Canberra, Brisbane, and the outer suburbs of Sydney and Melbourne. Certain parts of the highlands are used for agriculture and pastoral farming. For example, the Darling Downs and the Northern Tablelands are productive areas. Other rugged sections are used for forestry. Many of the most beautiful and untouched areas are now protected as National Parks. This helps preserve the complex ecosystem of the cordillera for the future.
