The Norma Cluster, also known as ACO 3627, is a massive group of galaxies. It contains many large, old galaxies that are colliding and radiating radio waves.

The history of this discovery spans several decades. The first signs of unusual movement were reported in 1973 and 1978. In 1986, researchers finally determined the location of the Great Attractor. There has been much debate regarding the actual mass of this region. In 1992, some scientists thought the signal was just a statistical effect called Malmquist bias. Later, in 2005, the Clusters in the Zone of Avoidance (CIZA) project provided new data. This X-ray survey suggested the Great Attractor was only one-tenth of the originally estimated mass. The survey also showed that the Milky Way is pulled by an even larger structure. This structure is the Shapley Attractor, located near the Shapley Supercluster. This suggests the Great Attractor itself is moving toward that larger point.

At the heart of this region lies a massive structure called the Norma Wall. This galaxy filament is also known as the Great Attractor Wall. It contains several different galaxy clusters, including Pavo II, Norma, and Centaurus-Crux. It also includes the CIZA J1324.7-5736 cluster. The most massive cluster within this wall is the Norma supercluster. Studies show that this wall extends into the constellations of Centaurus and Vela. This filament helps define the large-scale structure of our local universe.
