Building the canal took many hundreds of years. The oldest parts were finished in the early 5th century BC. These early paths helped the states of Wu and Yue move supplies. Later, Emperor Yang of the Sui dynasty finished a huge network in 609. He wanted to connect the fertile south to his capital at Luoyang. This helped feed his armies in the north. However, the hard work required to build it caused many rebellions.

The current main stem is known as the Jing–Hang Grand Canal. This route links Beijing in the north to Hangzhou in the south. The system is divided into six main subsections. The Jiangnan Canal starts at the Qiantang River and loops around Lake Tai. The Inner Canal runs from Yangzhou through Gaoyou Lake to join the Huai River. The Middle Canal connects the Nansi Lakes to Luoma Lake. The Lu Canal moves from the Nansi Lakes to the Yellow River. The Southern Canal runs from Linqing to the Hai River at Tianjin. Finally, the Northern Canal connects Tianjin to the outskirts of Beijing.

A pound lock is a device that allows ships to move between different water levels. It works by creating a chamber where water can be raised or lowered. This invention solved the problem of ships struggling to reach higher ground. Before this, workers sometimes used double slipways to haul boats over steep changes in level.

The history of the canal spans thousands of years. The oldest sections were completed in the early 5th century BC. During the Spring and Autumn period, the states of Wu and Yue used these paths for supplies. One early section was the Han Canal, which connected the Yangtze with the Huai River. Another very old section was the Hong Canal, which likely dates to the 6th century BC. Later, Emperor Yang of the Sui dynasty completed a massive network in 609. He wanted to link the fertile Jiangnan region to his capital at Luoyang. This helped supply his armies on the northern frontiers. However, the massive amount of forced labor used for construction led to rebellions and the fall of the Sui.

During the Tang dynasty, the canal became an economic engine. The city of Yangzhou became a major hub for trade and the government salt monopoly. The canal was vital for the caoyun, which is the shipping of grain collected as taxes. By the year 735, huge amounts of grain were shipped annually to northern China. Transport Commissioner Liu Yan even designed special river barges to fit the specific depths of different canal sections.

This system helped maintain the stability of the empire for many centuries.

Despite its success, the canal faced many dangerous challenges. Periodic flooding of the Yellow River often threatened the canal's safety. During the Medieval Warm Period, climate changes caused floods that eroded the banks. In times of war, enemies sometimes breached high dikes to sweep away troops. However, each successive dynasty took on the duty of restoring the canal and its flood control works. Even as the national capital moved to Beijing under the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, the canal's importance only grew.

Today, the Grand Canal remains a significant part of China's landscape. While railways and highways are common now, the canal is still in use. In the section south of the Yellow River, barges still carry heavy bulk cargo.

The canal also plays a role in the South-North Water Diversion Project. This project aims to provide clean potable water to the north. Because of this, there are many projects to improve water quality along the route.
