The city is situated to the northeast of Tehran, the national capital. It also sits a short distance from the Caspian Sea. The city is part of a larger geographic area that includes the wide Dasht-e Gorgan, also known as the Plains of Gorgan. To the east of Gorgan lies the Golestan National Park. This park is a vital area that holds a large portion of the fauna, or animal life, of Iran.

The climate in Gorgan is classified as a subtropical Mediterranean climate. This means the region experiences hot, humid summers and cool, wet winters. The local weather is often called the "moderate Caspian climate." Several environmental factors influence this specific weather pattern. These include the Alborz mountain range and its specific direction. Other factors include the altitude, local winds, and the proximity to the sea. The vegetation surface and weather fronts also play roles. Because of these complex factors, the region contains three distinct climate types. These are mountainous, semi-arid, and moderate plain climates. The Gorgan valley specifically experiences a semi-arid climate.

The history of the region is deeply connected to ancient civilizations. Archaeological sites near the city, such as Tureng Tepe and Shah Tepe, contain remains from the Neolithic and Chalcolithic eras. The Gorgan Plain itself contains more than 50 such important Neolithic sites.

The Greek historian Arrian once referred to the city as Zadracarta. This name translates to "the yellow city." This title came from the abundance of orange and lemon trees in the outskirts. During the time of the Achaemenid Empire, the area was part of the empire under Cyrus the Great or his successor, Cambyses. One of the most significant historical structures is the Great Wall of Gorgan. This is the second largest defensive wall in the world. It was constructed during the Parthian and Sasanian periods.

Over many centuries, the city has undergone significant changes and shifts in power. Gorgan remained an independent Zoroastrian state even after the Muslim Arabs conquered Persia in the 7th century. However, the city faced many invasions. In 1210, the army of the Kingdom of Georgia, led by the Mkhargrdzeli brothers, invaded and sacked the city. Later, in the 13th century, the Mongol invasion destroyed "Old Gorgan." Following this destruction, the regional center moved to a place called Astarabad. This area, which is the modern Gorgan, was a major political and religious center during the Qajar era.
