He served as the president of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015. Nigeria is known as Africa's biggest democracy. Jonathan's presidency was a significant period in the nation's history. He was the first incumbent president in Nigeria to lose a re-election bid. However, he was also the first Nigerian president to concede defeat. This peaceful transition allowed power to move to the opposition party. This was important because Nigeria had previously seen issues with vote-rigging and violence.

Jonathan's path to the presidency began with education and local service. He was born on November 20, 1957, in Otuoke, Bayelsa State. His father, Lawrence, was a canoe maker. His mother, Eunice, was a retired farmer. Jonathan studied science at the University of Port Harcourt. He earned a bachelor's degree in zoology. He also earned a master's degree in hydrobiology and fisheries biology. Finally, he received a doctorate in zoology. Before entering politics, he worked as a lecturer and an environmental-protection officer.

His political career started in the late 1990s with the People's Democratic Party (PDP). In 1999, he became the deputy governor of Bayelsa State. He served in this role alongside Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha. When Alamieyeseigha was removed from office in December 2005, Jonathan became the governor. He served as governor of Bayelsa State until 2007. After this, he was elected as the vice president of Nigeria. He served under President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua from 2007 to 2010.

In 2010, a change in leadership occurred due to the President's health. President Yar'Adua traveled to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment in November 2009. The Nigerian Senate used a rule called the doctrine of necessity. This allowed Jonathan to become the acting president on February 9, 2010. When President Yar'Adua died on May 5, 2010, Jonathan became the substantive president. He was sworn in on May 6, 2010. On May 29, 2011, he was sworn in again after winning a general election.

As president, Jonathan led a period of major economic shifts. Nigeria rebased its gross domestic product (GDP) for the first time in over ten years. This change made Nigeria the largest economy in Africa, overtaking Egypt and South Africa. His administration managed over US$454 billion in oil revenue. He also focused on a "Transformation Agenda." This plan included a seven-point agenda for national development. One major goal was power sector reform. He aimed to fix the electricity supply by breaking up the Power Holding Company of Nigeria. He handed control of electricity assets to 15 private companies.

Jonathan's government also invested heavily in infrastructure. His administration oversaw the construction of many new railways, such as the Abuja-Kaduna line. They worked on several federal roads, including the Lagos-Benin Expressway. The government also built the second Niger Bridge between Onitsha and Asaba. This helped reduce pressure on the old bridge from 1965. Additionally, the Akanu Ibiam Airport in Enugu was upgraded to an international airport. These projects were meant to connect different regions to the rest of the world.

Despite these developments, his administration faced many serious challenges. There were many reports of corruption and financial irregularities. For example, the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation failed to account for US$48.9 billion in oil revenue. Some officials were accused of diverting large sums of money from the national treasury. In 2012, the government faced protests over the removal of fuel subsidies. Many people protested because the cost of petrol was rising. Jonathan responded by creating the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Program (SURE-P). This program used saved money for roads, bridges, and maternal health.
