Astronomers discovered this object in July 2007. Megan Schwamb, Michael Brown, and David Rabinowitz found it at Palomar Observatory. They used the Samuel Oschin telescope for their work.

Schwamb used a method called blinking to find it. She compared images to see how objects moved. The discovery was part of her doctoral thesis. The team announced the discovery to the world in January 2009. It was given a provisional name because it was found in late July.

Gonggong exists in a 3:10 orbital resonance with Neptune. This means Gonggong completes exactly three orbits for every ten orbits Neptune completes.

However, it is much shorter than the 11,400-year period of Eris. This complex relationship with Neptune helps define its place in the scattered disc.
