Historically, golf balls were made from simple, biodegradable materials. From the 14th through the 17th centuries, players likely used hard wooden balls made from beech or boxwood. It is also possible they used leather balls filled with cow hair. Later, the "featherie" became popular. This was a hand-sewn leather pouch stuffed with boiled chicken or goose feathers. Because making them was so tedious, they were very expensive. A single featherie could cost the equivalent of US$10–$20 today.

Modern golf balls utilize advanced synthetic materials and complex layering. In the mid-1960s, materials like Surlyn (an ionomer of ethylene acid) and urethane blends replaced the soft balatá sap. These new materials are much more resistant to being cut by clubfaces. Today, balls are classified by their layers as two-piece, three-piece, or four-piece designs. Companies use specific dimple patterns to achieve different goals. For example, Titleist Pro V1 uses a 388-dimple design for aerodynamics. The Taylormade TP5 uses circular and hexagonal dimples to reduce drag. Callaway uses a hexagonal design for straighter flights.
Technological shifts have also changed how balls are constructed internally. Early liquid-core balls sometimes contained caustic liquids that could cause injuries. By the 1970s, some liquid cores contained crystalline materials that could cause injuries if the ball exploded during dissection. In 1967, Jim Bartsch patented a solid golf ball design. Spalding later used chemical engineering to create a resin that allowed for solid-core "2-piece" balls. While most players now use these durable solid cores, some new biodegradable options are appearing. These include balls made from wood, cornstarch, or even lobster shells.
