The science of glassblowing relies on the unique properties of molten glass. Glass has a liquid structure where atoms are held in a disordered, random network by strong chemical bonds. Because of this, molten glass is viscous, meaning it is thick and flows slowly. When a glassblower introduces air, the glass expands through inflation. To make this easier, ancient glassmakers changed the glass composition. They used a lower concentration of natron, which acts as a flux. This change made the molten glass stiffer and easier to control during the blowing process.

During the blowing process, temperature control is vital for creating uniform thickness. Thinner layers of glass lose heat faster than thicker sections. As they cool, these thin layers become more viscous, or thicker in flow. This physical change prevents the thin parts from blowing through or breaking. The mold determines the shape and texture of the glass rather than the blower's hand movements. Makers use single-piece molds for simple items like tableware. For more complex designs, they use multi-piece molds made of several segments. Metal molds, such as those made of bronze, are particularly effective at creating high-relief designs. This technique allowed for the mass production and widespread distribution of glass objects.

Modern glassblowing requires a precise sequence of heating and cooling using three different furnaces. First, the glass is melted in a furnace at approximately 1100°C, where it appears white-hot. After the glass "fines out" to remove bubbles, the temperature is lowered to about 1000°C for working. The glassblower then uses a "glory hole" to reheat the piece between shaping steps. Some advanced techniques, like reticello, involve twisting two bubbles of cane in different directions.
