The very first glass objects were likely small beads. These might have been made by accident while people were working with metals. By the 13th century, the island of Murano in Venice became a famous place for making glass. They made a very clear glass called cristallo.

Later, in 1675, George Ravenscroft invented lead crystal glass. In the 1950s, a company called Pilkington Bros. created a new way to make flat glass sheets.

We use glass for many different jobs in our modern world. It can be colored with metal salts to make beautiful stained glass windows.

While it behaves mechanically like a solid, its atomic structure resembles a supercooled liquid. Because glass is often transparent and chemically inert, it is vital for many technologies. We use it for everything from simple window panes to complex optical lenses. It is also used in decorative arts and high-tech communication tools.

Most manufactured glass is created through a process called melt quenching. First, raw materials are heated until they reach a molten, liquid state.

To form glass, this liquid must undergo rapid cooling. This speed is important because it prevents crystallization from occurring. Instead, the disordered atomic configuration of the liquid is frozen into a solid state. The ability of a material to undergo this process is called its glass-forming ability.

Most modern glass is soda-lime glass, which contains approximately 70% silica. This specific type accounts for about 90% of all manufactured glass today.

Glass can also be found in nature without human intervention. Volcanic activity can create glass when felsic lava cools rapidly. This results in obsidian, a natural glass with high silica content.

Other forms of glass result from high-energy impacts. Impactite is glass created when a meteorite strikes the ground. Notable examples include Moldavite from Europe and Libyan desert glass from the Sahara. Even lightning can create glass by striking sand. This process produces hollow, branching structures known as fulgurites.

The history of glassmaking is thousands of years old. Archaeological evidence suggests glassmaking began around 3600 BC in Mesopotamia, Egypt, or Syria. The earliest known objects were likely small beads. These may have been accidental by-products of metalworking or the production of faience. Faience is a type of pottery that uses lead glazes. True, sustained glass production appeared around 1600 BC in Mesopotamia and 1500 BC in Egypt. During the Late Bronze Age, technology in Egypt and Western Asia grew rapidly.

During the Roman Empire, glass became a significant trade item. The term "glass" likely originated from the late-Latin term "glesum" in the Roman center of Trier.

Romans were skilled at making cameo glass. This involved etching and carving through fused layers of different colors. In the 13th century, the island of Murano in Venice became a major center for glass production. Murano makers developed "cristallo," an exceptionally clear glass that looked like natural crystal. This was used for mirrors, lenses, and ship lanterns. Later, in 1675, George Ravenscroft invented lead crystal glass.

Industrial advancements in the 20th century changed how we use glass. In the 1920s, the mould-etch process allowed images to be etched directly into molds. This led to the production of affordable "Depression glass" in the 1930s. In the 1950s, Pilkington Bros. developed the float glass process. This method involves floating molten glass on tin to create high-quality, distortion-free flat sheets.

This innovation made it possible to build modern multi-story buildings with glass curtain walls. Today, laminated glass is used widely for vehicle windscreens.

Because of its unique properties, glass is essential to many scientific fields. Its refractive and reflective properties make it perfect for optical lenses and prisms. These tools help astronomers study space and doctors study medicine. Glass fibers are also used in communication networks to carry data. Some glass is matted into glass wool to act as thermal insulation by trapping air.
