While some people became very rich, life was hard for others. Large companies called "trusts" began to control many different markets.

Some leaders, known as "Robber Barons," gained huge amounts of wealth and power. This wealth was often held by just a few people. Many workers lived in crowded and unsanitary tenement homes in the cities. In the South, African Americans faced very unfair laws and lost their political power.

The South also struggled with low prices for goods like cotton and tobacco.

People began to work together to make the country better. Labor unions formed to fight for safer jobs and shorter work days.

They also wanted to stop the use of child labor in factories. Middle-class reformers worked to make food and medicine safer for everyone. Some groups fought for the right for women to vote.
