That same year, he won his first major title at the South American Championship. Under the coaching of Bernardo Rezende, Giba became a leader of a dominant squad. This era included legendary players like Dante, André, Gustavo, André Heller, Ricardo Garcia, and Sérgio Santos. After a loss in the 2002 World League final, the Brazilian team began a massive winning streak. They went on to win 11 consecutive major international competitions.

The sheer number of titles Giba won is a testament to his dominance. He helped Brazil secure three World Championships in 2002, 2006, and 2010. He also won eight World League titles and three World Grand Champions Cups. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, he led Brazil to a gold medal.
