Pandas live in mountain forests. They mostly eat bamboo. About 99% of their food is bamboo. Because bamboo does not give much power, they must eat a lot. An adult may eat 12 to 38 kilograms of bamboo shoots every day.

Pandas like to be alone. They only meet during mating season. Females care for their cubs for 18 to 24 months.

In the past, pandas lived in more places. Now, farming and building have taken their homes. People are working to help them. There are about 2,060 pandas in the wild. The giant panda is now called a vulnerable species. This means they need our help to stay safe.

Eating is a very important job for a panda. Most of its diet, about 99 percent, is bamboo.

Because bamboo does not provide much energy, the panda must eat a lot. An adult might eat 12 to 38 kilograms of bamboo shoots every day. To help it eat, the panda has a special bone in its paw. This bone works like a thumb to hold bamboo in place. The panda also has very large teeth to chew the tough plants.

Scientists have studied pandas to learn where they belong in nature. For a long time, people debated if they were bears or raccoons. In 1985, studies showed they are true bears. They belong to the family Ursidae. The giant panda is actually the first branch to split off from other bears. This makes them a very special part of the bear family.

Pandas live in specific mountain areas in China.

They are found in places like Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu. Some pandas, called the Qinling panda, have brown and white fur instead of black and white. These pandas live in the Qinling Mountains. A survey from 2011 to 2014 estimated there were about 1,864 older pandas in the wild. When you include the young cubs, the total number is about 2,060.

In the past, pandas lived in many more places, including parts of Southeast Asia. Today, they face hard jobs because of farming and building. These activities have taken away much of their forest homes. Because of this, the giant panda is listed as a vulnerable species. This means they need help from people to stay safe in the wild.

The giant panda, scientifically known as *Ailuropoda melanoleuca*, is a unique bear species found only in China.

It is easily recognized by its thick, white coat and distinctive black patches. These patches appear around its eyes, ears, legs, and shoulders. This specific coloration may help with camouflage in different environments. The white fur blends into snowy landscapes during the winter. Meanwhile, the black patches help the bear hide in the shade. This pattern is a type of disruptive coloration that helps them blend in from a distance.

Physically, the giant panda has a heavy, rotund body shape typical of bears. Adults can grow quite large, with males often being 10% to 20% larger than females. A male can weigh up to 159 kilograms, while females are generally smaller. Their tails are relatively long, measuring about 12 to 20 centimeters. One of their most interesting physical features is a specialized bone in the forepaw. This is a modified sesamoid bone that acts like a thumb. It allows the panda to grip and hold bamboo stalks firmly while feeding.

Although they belong to the order Carnivora, giant pandas have a very unusual diet.

About 99% of what they eat is bamboo and bamboo shoots. Because bamboo is low in energy, pandas must consume massive amounts to survive. An adult may eat between 12 and 38 kilograms of bamboo shoots every single day. They have evolved specialized anatomy to handle this tough plant matter. They possess large molar teeth and expanded temporal fossae, which are openings in the skull. These features support very large chewing muscles. In fact, pandas have the highest bite force relative to their body size among all bears.

Digesting bamboo is a complex biological process for the panda.

Giant Panda Eating.jpg

Bamboo contains cyanide, which is toxic to many animals. To survive, pandas use specialized gut microbes to help break down these poisons. About 80% of the cyanide they absorb is converted into a less toxic substance called thiocyanate. This is then discharged through their urine. Because their digestive tracts are short and straight, food passes through very quickly. This rapid movement means they cannot extract much energy from every bite. As a result, pandas must defecate up to 40 times a day.

For a long time, scientists debated where pandas fit in the tree of life. They share some traits with bears and some with raccoons. However, molecular studies conducted in 1985 proved they are true bears. They belong to the family Ursidae. Interestingly, the giant panda is the most basal member of this family. This means its lineage branched off from the common ancestor of all bears earlier than any other living bear species. This makes them a very ancient and distinct part of the bear family.

There are two recognized subspecies of the giant panda.

Quinlingpandabearr.jpg
Quinlingpandabearr.jpg
The most common is *A. m. melanoleuca*, which has the classic black and white pattern. These are mostly found in the Sichuan province. The second is the Qinling panda, known as *A. m. qinlingensis*. These pandas live in the Qinling Mountains of Shaanxi. They are different because they have a light brown and white coat instead of black and white. They also have smaller skulls and larger molars than the typical subspecies. Genetic studies show these two groups separated about 300,000 years ago.

In the wild, giant pandas live in small, isolated groups in mountainous regions.

They prefer high elevations, often living in old-growth forests with plenty of bamboo. Historically, their range was much larger, stretching across parts of Southeast Asia. However, human activities like farming and deforestation have destroyed much of their habitat. By 2001, it was estimated their range had declined by 99% compared to earlier times. Because of these threats, the giant panda is now classified as Vulnerable. Recent surveys from 2011 to 2014 estimated the wild population at approximately 2,060 individuals.
