Seven species in the subfamily show this trait. Another method involves looking at stridulating ridges. These are sound-producing ridges found on the inside of the larger claw. These ridges can appear as rows of small bumps called tubercles or as small ridges called striae.

Taxonomy, or the way we classify living things, has changed for these crabs. For a long time, scientists thought there was only one genus called Ocypode. However, in 2013, Katsushi Sakai and Michael Türkay reclassified the gulf ghost crab. They placed it into a new genus called Hoplocypode. They made this change because its gonopods were different. In Hoplocypode, the first gonopod has a complex, hoof-shaped tip. In the Ocypode genus, the gonopods are simple and curved. Currently, the subfamily Ocypodinae includes 22 species divided into these two genera.

Ghost crabs have amazing ways of surviving on the beach. They are mostly nocturnal, meaning they are active at night. They stay in their burrows during the hottest parts of the day. They are also very fast runners. As they speed up, their walking style changes. At high speeds, they lift their fourth pair of legs. At their fastest, they run using only the first and second pairs of legs.
