Georges Danton was a famous leader in France. 

Danton helped lead the new government. He was the Minister of Justice. He also led a group called the Committee of Public Safety. Danton often gave speeches to crowds. He spoke about fighting for the country.
But Danton had many rivals in the government. One rival was a man named Maximilien Robespierre. Danton wanted to end a violent time called the Terror. He thought the fighting should stop. This made his rivals angry. They accused him of being part of a plot.
Danton was put on trial. He was found guilty and was executed by the guillotine.

Political rivalries eventually led to Danton's downfall. He began to disagree with Maximilien Robespierre over the use of force. 
Danton's final months were defined by legal battles and execution. He faced a trial on charges of conspiracy and venality.
