Smoot developed several methods to detect these variations. He first worked with a differential radiometer. This instrument was mounted on a Lockheed U-2 airplane. It measured the temperature difference of the CMB between two directions 60 degrees apart. This helped prove that the overall rotation of the universe was zero. Later, he proposed a much more advanced project to NASA. He wanted a satellite that was more sensitive than airplane-mounted tools. This satellite would be far above the interference of air pollution.
This proposal became the Cosmic Background Explorer, known as COBE. 
These findings had massive scientific significance. The detection of anisotropies provided direct evidence for the birth of the universe. Smoot famously remarked that the discovery felt like "looking at God." Because of this breakthrough, Smoot shared the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics with John C. Mather. 
Smoot's career included many diverse and surprising projects. He participated in the Millimeter Anisotropy eXperiment IMaging Array using a stratospheric balloon. He also collaborated on the Planck satellite, which is a third-generation observatory for CMB anisotropy. He worked on the design for the Supernova/Acceleration Probe to study dark energy. Beyond space, he worked as an artificial intelligence scientist for the GTA Foundation. He even appeared as himself on the television show "The Big Bang Theory." He also won a million-dollar prize on the game show "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?"
Throughout his life, Smoot was committed to supporting the scientific community. In 2007, he donated $500,000 to the Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics. He also gave additional Nobel Prize money to the East Bay Community Foundation. He was a vocal advocate for basic science research. In 2008, he signed a letter to President George W. Bush requesting more funding for science agencies. Smoot was born in Yukon, Florida, on February 20, 1945. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning degrees in mathematics and physics. He died from a heart attack in Paris on September 18, 2025, at the age of 80.
