The COBE project was a massive undertaking that cost $160 million. It was launched on November 18, 1989, following a delay caused by the destruction of the Space Shuttle Challenger. The mission required intense teamwork from over 1,000 researchers and engineers. John Mather coordinated the entire process for the mission.
