Because of the complexity of his ideas, Antheil's works often had distinct stages of development. For example, the original plan for *Ballet Mécanique* used many synchronized player pianos. However, synchronization difficulties forced a rewrite. The final version used a single pianola and several human pianists instead. His piano works also followed specific themes related to technology. He wrote the *Second Sonata*, which he called "The Airplane." He also composed the *Sonata Sauvage* and the *Third Sonata*, titled "Death of Machines." These pieces moved away from traditional harmony toward a more mechanical style.
Antheil’s journey began in Trenton, New Jersey, in 1900.
