It sits at the northwestern edge of this giant area. Many people think of it as its own continent. However, it is actually a large peninsula attached to Asia. To the west, the Atlantic Ocean meets the coast. To the south, the Mediterranean Sea separates Europe from Africa.

The eastern edge is often marked by the Ural Mountains in Russia. This boundary can also follow the Ural River or the Caspian Sea.

The shape of Europe is very interesting to look at. It is made of many peninsulas and islands. A peninsula is a piece of land with water on three sides. For example, the Scandinavian Peninsula is in the north. Italy and Iberia are peninsulas in the south.

The coastline is very bumpy with many bays and gulfs. This makes the land look like it is reaching into the sea. Iceland is also part of Europe because it is quite close to the mainland.

Mount Elbrus in Russia is the highest peak on the continent. If you move north, the mountains turn into hills and then flat plains. The Great European Plain is a huge, flat area in the east.

Some islands, like the British Isles, were once joined to the mainland. They were cut off when the sea levels rose.

Water is a huge part of the European landscape. Many long rivers flow through the different regions. The Volga is the longest river in Europe. The Danube is the second longest river.

These rivers carry a lot of water to the oceans. Some rivers, like the Glomma in Norway, are very powerful. The Rhine Falls is the largest waterfall by how much water flows through it.

The weather in Europe changes depending on where you stand. In the north, the climate can be subarctic and very cold.

In the south, the Mediterranean climate is much warmer. The temperature difference between summer and winter grows as you move east. In Ireland, the temperature does not change much throughout the year. But near the Caspian Sea, the change can be as much as 40 °C.

Europe is traditionally defined as one of the seven continents.

Physically, it is the northwestern peninsula of the larger landmass called Eurasia. Asia occupies the center and east of this continuous landmass. Some geographers prefer the term Eurasian continent. This is because Europe is not entirely surrounded by sea. The southeastern border has changed in various ways for centuries. The western boundary is the Atlantic Ocean. To the south, the Mediterranean Sea separates Europe from Africa.

The boundaries of Europe are often debated. The eastern frontier is usually marked by the Ural Mountains in Russia. Russia is the largest country by land area on the continent. The boundary may also follow the Ural River or the Emba River. It continues to the Caspian Sea. The crest of the Caucasus Mountains also forms a boundary. This line moves toward the Black Sea. Finally, the Bosporus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles conclude the Asian boundary.

Iceland is usually included in Europe. It is over twice as close to mainland Europe as it is to North America.

In terms of shape, Europe is a collection of connected peninsulas and nearby islands.

A peninsula is a piece of land surrounded by water on three sides. The two largest peninsulas are Europe itself and Scandinavia. The Baltic Sea divides these two areas. Three smaller peninsulas emerge from the southern margin. These are Iberia, Italy, and the Balkans. The Balkan peninsula is separated from Asia by the Black and Aegean Seas. Italy is separated from the Balkans by the Adriatic Sea. The Mediterranean Sea separates Italy from Iberia.

Land relief in Europe shows great variation in small areas. The southern regions are very mountainous. These mountains include the Alps, the Pyrenees, and the Carpathians. Moving north, the terrain descends into hilly uplands. Eventually, the land becomes broad, low northern plains. These plains are vast in the east. An arc of uplands also exists along the northwestern seaboard. This begins in southwestern Ireland and crosses through Great Britain. It continues up the mountainous, fjord-cut spine of Norway.

Sub-regions like Iberia contain their own complex features. These include many plateaus, river valleys, and basins.

The geology of Europe is highly varied and complex. This complexity creates many different landscapes. For example, you can see the Scottish Highlands or the rolling plains of Hungary. There is a major dichotomy in the land. Southern Europe has high mountains and highlands. In contrast, a vast northern plain exists in the north. This plain is partially underwater. It ranges from Great Britain in the west to the Ural Mountains in the east. The northern plains contain the old geological continent of Baltica. The southern and western highlands are fragments from other geological continents.

Water is essential to the European landscape. Many important rivers flow through the continent. The Volga is the longest river in Europe. The Danube is the second-longest river.

The Rhine is the largest river in Western Europe. The Rhône is the largest river in France. The Po is the largest river in Italy. The Rhine Falls is the largest waterfall by flow rate.

Rivers like the Volga carry massive amounts of water. The Volga has an average discharge of 8,087 cubic meters per second. The Danube follows with 6,450 cubic meters per second.

The climate of Europe changes based on location. High mountainous areas are colder and wetter. In the east, Europe has less precipitation than the west. The temperature difference between summer and winter increases as you move southeast. In Ireland, the difference is only 10 °C. Near the Caspian Sea, the difference can reach 40 °C.

Different climate types exist across the land. Western Europe generally has a temperate maritime climate. The south has a Mediterranean climate. The north-central and eastern parts have a humid continental climate. The northernmost parts have a subarctic climate. Desert climates exist in parts of Kazakhstan and southeastern Spain.
