Vincent's musical foundation was built on several diverse influences. He grew up in Virginia, where his family operated a country store. His musical interests included classical works like Beethoven's Egmont overture. He received his first guitar as a gift when he was twelve years old. Before his music career began, Vincent served in the United States Navy. He joined the fleet at age 17 and served as a crewman aboard the ship Chukawan. The crash involved musician Eddie Cochran and songwriter Sharon Sheeley. Vincent suffered broken ribs and a broken collarbone. The accident also worsened his existing leg injury. Tragically, Eddie Cochran died the following day from his injuries. This event marked a difficult period in Vincent's life and career.

In 1969, he recorded the album "I'm Back and I'm Proud" for Dandelion Records. This album featured backing vocals from Linda Ronstadt.
