Gene Cernan was a brave pilot.

Gene Cernan was a pilot.

Gene Cernan was a famous American astronaut. He also worked as a pilot for the Navy.
Cernan traveled into space three times. He went to the Moon twice. On his first trip, he flew the Gemini 9A ship. He even went for a spacewalk outside the ship.
His most famous trip was Apollo 17. He was the commander, which means he was the leader. He and a scientist named Harrison Schmitt walked on the Moon. They drove a small rover across the ground. They collected many rocks to study.
Gene Cernan was a famous American astronaut and a skilled pilot. He was also an electrical engineer and an aeronautical engineer.
Cernan followed a very careful path to reach the stars. First, he studied electrical engineering at Purdue University in Indiana. He then joined the U.S. Navy through a special training program. He learned to fly many different types of jets, like the T-28 Trojan. He even made at least 200 successful landings on aircraft carriers.
His journey into space began with the Gemini program. In 1966, he flew on the Gemini 9A mission.

Cernan's most famous mission was Apollo 17 in December 1972. He served as the commander, which means he was the leader of the crew. He traveled to the Moon with a geologist named Harrison Schmitt. Together, they spent about 22 hours exploring the Taurus-Littrow valley.
Cernan's life connects to many things we know about exploration. He was one of only twelve people to ever walk on the Moon. He was also one of only three astronauts to visit the Moon twice.
Eugene Andrew Cernan was a distinguished American astronaut and naval aviator. He was also a highly skilled electrical and aeronautical engineer.
Cernan's journey to space began with a strong foundation in engineering. He graduated from Purdue University in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering. During his time there, he held several leadership roles in various societies. After college, he joined the U.S. Navy through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps. He underwent extensive flight training in several states, including Florida and Texas. He learned to fly aircraft like the T-28 Trojan and the F9F Panther.
In October 1963, NASA selected Cernan as part of its third group of astronauts. His first mission was the Gemini 9A flight in June 1966.
Cernan played a vital role in the Apollo program, which aimed to land humans on the Moon. In May 1969, he served as the Lunar Module pilot for Apollo 10.

Cernan’s most significant achievement came during the Apollo 17 mission in December 1972. He served as the mission commander, making him the leader of the crew. He flew with Harrison Schmitt, who was the only professional geologist in the active Apollo astronaut roster. Cernan chose to fly with Schmitt even when it changed the original crew lineup. Together, they explored the Taurus-Littrow valley for about 22 hours of surface activity. This was more than three times the length of the EVA performed by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.
During the Apollo 17 mission, the crew collected a record amount of geologic samples. These samples were vital for helping scientists understand the early history of the Moon. Cernan’s leadership helped close out the Apollo program's lunar exploration missions. As he prepared to leave the Moon, he spoke the final words ever spoken by a human standing on the lunar surface. He retired from the Navy in 1976 with the rank of captain. He later moved into private business and founded The Cernan Corporation in 1981. He also worked as a science contributor for television programs like Good Morning America.
Cernan remained a passionate advocate for space exploration throughout his later life. In 2010, he testified before the U.S. Congress regarding the cancellation of the Constellation program. This program had been designed to return humans to the Moon and eventually to Mars.
