Because of its coastal location, it served as a key stop on the spice trade route. This route connected North Africa to the Levant region. The city's geography made it a crucial link for maritime and land-based commerce for thousands of years.

The history of settlement in this area is remarkably deep. Archaeological evidence shows habitation dating back approximately 5,000 years.

Early settlement began at Tell es-Sakan, an ancient Egyptian fortress in Canaanite territory. This site was inhabited until roughly 3000 BC. Later, an urban center called Tell el-Ajjul grew near the Wadi Ghazza riverbed. By the 15th century BC, the name Gaza appeared in the military records of the Egyptian Pharaoh Thutmose III. During this era, the city became a stop on the King's Highway, a major trade route. Gaza also served as the administrative capital for Egypt in Canaan during certain periods.

Throughout the ancient world, Gaza was frequently contested by different empires. The Philistines conquered the region in the 12th century BC, making it part of their pentapolis, a group of five city-states.

Alexander the Great later besieged the city for five months in 332 BC. After his conquest, he organized the city into a polis, or a Greek city-state. Under the Seleucid Empire, the city was renamed Seleucia to help control the surrounding territory. This period allowed Greek culture to flourish, turning Gaza into a center for Hellenistic learning. The city even minted its own coins during this time.

The Roman and Byzantine periods brought further structural changes to the city. In 63 BC, the Roman general Pompey Magnus incorporated Gaza into the Roman Empire. It became part of the province of Judaea. During Roman rule, Gaza was a prosperous city with a 500-member senate. The city was home to diverse populations, including Greeks, Romans, and Jews. As the Byzantine Empire took control, Christianity spread rapidly. By the 4th century AD, a Christian bishopric was established. Philosophers of this era even referred to Gaza as the "Athens of Asia" due to its intellectual reputation.

In 635 AD, the Rashidun army conquered Gaza, making it the first city in the Palestine region to fall to them. This transition turned Gaza into a significant center for Islamic law. The city is also traditionally significant in Islam as the burial site of Hashim ibn Abd Manaf. Later, the city faced various hardships, including Mongol raids and locust swarms. These events reduced the city to a small village by the 16th century. During the Ottoman Empire, the Ridwan dynasty provided a period of peace and great commerce. The municipality of Gaza City was eventually established in 1893.

In the 20th century, the political landscape shifted through several major conflicts. Following World War I, British forces took control, making Gaza part of Mandatory Palestine. After the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Egypt administered the Gaza Strip. This period saw a sharp rise in population due to an influx of Palestinian refugees. In 1967, Israel occupied the city during the Six-Day War. In 1993, control was transferred to the Palestinian National Authority. Following the 2006 elections, a conflict between Fatah and Hamas led to Hamas taking power. This resulted in an Israeli-led and Egyptian-supported blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Modern Gaza City faces significant economic and humanitarian challenges. The primary economic activities are agriculture and small-scale industries. However, the blockade and recurring conflicts have placed the economy under severe pressure. As of 2017, the population was recorded at 590,481 people. The population is notably young, with roughly 75% of residents under the age of 25.
