During development, they go through a process called torsion. This means their internal parts rotate 180 degrees to one side. Because of this, their anus ends up above their head. This change makes the animal asymmetrical, meaning its left and right sides are not the same. This helps them retract their front end into their shells more easily for protection.

Scientists have studied these creatures for a long time.

In 1795, the term "gasteropodes" was used in scientific writing. This name comes from Greek words meaning "stomach" and "foot." It describes how their foot is located right below their guts. Before they were called gastropods, people often called them univalves. This name meant "one valve" to show they have one shell. This helped distinguish them from clams, which are bivalves with two shells.

There are many different types of gastropods living today. Some estimates say there are between 65,000 and 80,000 living species. Others suggest the number could be as high as 120,000. They may also breathe through their skin.
