The flower itself is composed of six petal-like segments called tepals. These tepals are arranged in two distinct circles, or whorls. The outer whorl contains three larger, spreading tepals. The inner whorl consists of three smaller tepals. These inner segments often feature green markings at their base or tips. These markings can sometimes appear as bridge-shaped patterns. The reproductive parts include six short stamens and a three-celled ovary. After pollination, this ovary matures into a fleshy, three-celled capsule fruit.

This structure contains substances that attract ants. Ants carry the seeds to new locations, helping the plants expand their reach.
