Fuzhou is the capital city of the Fujian province in China.

The population of Fuzhou is very large and growing quickly. According to the 2020 Chinese census, the population was 8,291,268 people. The city is divided into urban and rural administrative areas. In 2020, 72.49% of the people, or about 6,010,242 inhabitants, lived in urban areas. The remaining 27.51% lived in rural areas.
The history of the area stretches back to prehistoric times. Bone analysis shows genetic links between ancient inhabitants of Xiying and Austronesian peoples. The Keqiutou site is a very important archaeological location. It dates from 6500 to 5000 BC and was a planned settlement. This site is the oldest known place for rice cultivation in Fujian.

Fuzhou has experienced many different periods of rule and change. During the Han dynasty, the area was part of the Minyue people. In 110 BC, the Wu Emperor defeated Minyue during the Han–Minyue War. This led to the annexation of the territory into China. Later, during the Jin dynasty in 282, people built artificial lakes. These were known as the East Lake and West Lake.

In the years following the Tang dynasty, new kingdoms emerged. The warlord brothers Wang Chao and Wang Shenzhi captured the city in 893. They eventually founded the independent Min Kingdom in 909. Their main capital was at Changle, which is now a district of Fuzhou.

The Ming and Qing dynasties brought Fuzhou into more contact with the world. Between 1405 and 1433, Admiral Zheng He's naval fleets visited the city seven times. In the 1800s, Fuzhou became a treaty port following the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842. This opened the city to Western merchants and missionaries. Protestant missions established many hospitals and schools. The city also faced military conflict, such as the Battle of Fuzhou in 1884. During this battle, the Fujian Fleet was destroyed in Mawei Harbor.
Today, Fuzhou is a modern city with deep cultural roots. It features a mix of high-tech districts and traditional architecture. The Taixi Central Business District shows the city's modern skyline.
