This place has a long history. Millions of years ago, it was not all mountains. The area once had deserts and even oceans. Long ago, dinosaurs lived here. You can find fossils of them in the rocks. One layer of rock has tracks from sauropods. These were very large dinosaurs.
The mountains grew in steps over a long time. At first, magma rose and cooled into granite. Later, the land sank and filled with sand and mud. Finally, the mountains rose up again. Glaciers helped shape the peaks we see today. The mountains also help block storms from the plains.
The Front Range is a famous row of mountains. It is part of the Southern Rocky Mountains in North America. These mountains sit mostly in the middle of Colorado. They also reach into the southeast part of Wyoming. The range runs north to south between Casper, Wyoming, and Pueblo, Colorado.

You might even find fossils of sea turtles in those layers.
Today, the Front Range is a place for many adventures. People visit the mountains to hike, climb, and camp during warm months. In the winter, people go there to ski and snowboard. You can see many famous peaks while driving along Interstate 25. Some of the most well-known mountains are Pikes Peak and Longs Peak.
Getting to the mountains is easy with many paths. Two main highways, Interstate 70 and Interstate 80, help people travel through the region.
The Front Range is a major mountain range within the Southern Rocky Mountains of North America. It is located primarily in the central part of Colorado. It also extends into the southeastern portion of Wyoming. The range runs north to south between Casper, Wyoming, and Pueblo, Colorado.
The geology of this region is incredibly complex. About 1 billion years ago, magma rose through the mantle. This magma cooled to form Precambrian Pikes Peak Granite. Over the next 500 million years, this granite eroded. No new sediment formed during this time. This created a geological feature called the Great Unconformity. Eventually, the region began to sink. This created space for sediments to deposit. Eroded granite became sand particles that formed strata, or layers of sediment. About 300 million years ago, the sinking reversed. The sediment-covered granite uplifted to form the Ancestral Rocky Mountains.
Different layers of rock tell stories of ancient environments. The Fountain Formation consists of red sediment from the eroded Ancestral Rockies. Red Rocks Amphitheatre sits within this formation. Around 280 million years ago, the area was part of the super-continent Pangaea. Sand deserts covered the land. These dunes became the Lyons Sandstone. This rock shows cross-bedding and fossil footprints. Later, the Lykins Formation formed in tidal flats. This layer contains muddy limestone and stromatolites. Stromatolites are structures created by ancient organisms. These layers formed during the break-up of Pangaea. This was near the Permian–Triassic Boundary, which saw a massive extinction event.
During the Late Jurassic, the Morrison Formation created a new environment. This formation contains excellent fossils. It is famous for sauropod bones and tracks. The landscape was filled with ferns and Zamites plants. Grass had not yet evolved during this time. Later, the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway opened. This sea stretched from the Arctic to the Tropics. The Dakota Sandstone formed in this near-shore environment. It contains ripple marks and dinosaur tracks. The Dakota Hogback is a ridge formed by these resistant rocks.
The seaway continued to change the landscape. It widened and narrowed over 35 million years. The Benton Group and Niobrara Formation were deposited in these waters. These beds contain many marine fossils. You can find ammonites, fish, and marine reptiles like mosasaurs and plesiosaurs. Rare bird and dinosaur remains are also found here. Around 68 million years ago, the Laramide Orogeny caused the mountains to rise again. This turned the sea floor into land. The Denver Formation formed during this time. It contains fossils of Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus rex.
Massive events shaped the modern landscape. A meteor impact in the Yucatán Peninsula caused a major extinction. This ended the reign of many species, including dinosaurs. Much later, a volcanic eruption occurred 37 million years ago. Hot ash covered the landscape in the Collegiate Range. This ash turned into a hard rock called rhyolite. Eventually, mass floods eroded this volcanic rock. This formed the Castle Rock Conglomerate. About 10 million years ago, the Front Range rose again. Resistant granite thrust upward. Glaciation during the Quaternary age helped unbury the range. This process created the granitic peaks we see today.
The Front Range contains many prominent peaks. Grays Peak is the highest point in the range. It is also the highest point on the Continental Divide. Other notable mountains include Mount Blue Sky, Longs Peak, and Pikes Peak. Mount Bierstadt and Torreys Peak are also significant. The mountains are a major destination for recreation. People enjoy hiking, climbing, and camping in summer. In winter, they go skiing and snowboarding. The mountains also affect local weather. They help block prevailing storms from the west. This moderates the weather for the urban corridor.
Travel through the region is well-supported by many routes. Interstate 25 runs north to south through the Front Range. Interstate 70 crosses the mountains at the Eisenhower Tunnel. Interstate 80 passes near Laramie, Wyoming. U.S. Route 34 travels through Rocky Mountain National Park. Many roads connect the mountains to the plains. The Union Pacific Railroad also operates two lines here. One route uses the 6.5-mile-long Moffat Tunnel. This tunnel runs parallel to the Colorado River. These transport links connect the mountains to many other places.
