Frits Philips was a prominent Dutch businessman and a leader of the Philips electronics company. He served as the fourth chairman of the board of directors for this major global corporation. Born on April 16, 1905, in Eindhoven, he was the only son of Anton Philips. His father and uncle were the original founders of the family business. Frits pursued a technical education to prepare for his future role in the company. In 1923, he began his studies at the Delft University of Technology. He eventually earned a degree in mechanical engineering in 1929. This technical background helped him understand the complex machines his company produced. In 1935, he was appointed as a vice-director and a member of the board. He later succeeded Frans Otten as the president of the company in 1961. He held this leadership position for ten years until 1971.

During World War II, Frits Philips demonstrated remarkable courage during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. While his father and other family members fled to the United States, Frits remained in the country. He worked to keep the company functioning under very difficult circumstances. Most importantly, he used his influence to protect people during the Holocaust. Frits convinced Nazi officials that 382 Jewish employees were indispensable to the production process. By making them appear essential to the factory, he saved their lives. For this heroic action, Yad Vashem recognized him as Righteous Among the Nations in 1996.

Frits was also a pioneer in the world of corporate aviation. Following the Second World War, business leaders needed faster ways to travel across Europe. He established the Philips Vliegdienst, which was a dedicated flight department for the company. He began this by acquiring a Beechcraft Super G18 aircraft. Over time, the fleet grew to include larger planes like Dassault Falcons and Fokker F27s. In 1977, he helped found the International Business Aviation Association in Europe. This organization helped standardize how businesses used aircraft for travel. He also played a key role in the development of Eindhoven Airport.

Beyond business, Frits was deeply committed to education and social responsibility. In 1966, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Philips, he designed a special gift for Eindhoven. He sketched the idea for a science and technology center on a paper napkin. This building became known as the Evoluon. Although it later became a conference center, it was originally meant to inspire learning. In 1986, he also launched the Caux Round Table. This group brought together executives from Europe, Japan, and America. He wanted to prevent trade wars and encourage "Corporate Social Responsibility," which means businesses acting ethically. The group's principles were even presented to the United Nations in 1994.

In his home city of Eindhoven, Frits was a beloved figure known as "Meneer Frits." He was famous for his humility and for treating everyone with equal respect. He often spoke with factory workers rather than just staying with company directors. Even as a wealthy leader, he attended PSV football matches in the regular stands. He famously sat in section D, row 22, seat 43. After his death in 2005, the football club kept that specific seat empty as a memorial.
