He is widely recognized as one of Germany's most significant classical playwrights. His literary contributions helped shape the movement known as Weimar Classicism. This period emphasized aesthetic ideals and the moral purpose of art. Schiller's work often explored complex themes of social corruption and republican ideals.

His diverse career spanned from medical practice to university professorship.

Schiller's early life was shaped by his religious upbringing in Marbach. He was born on November 10, 1759, to Johann Kaspar Schiller and Elisabetha Dorothea Schiller. His father was a military doctor serving in the Seven Years' War. Because of this, the family moved frequently to follow his father's assignments. In Lorch, Schiller received his primary education from a local priest. This religious training included studying Latin and Greek. As a child, he even practiced preaching while wearing black robes.

His path toward literature was not originally planned by his family. In 1773, he entered the Karlsschule, an elite military academy in Stuttgart. He initially studied law but eventually switched his focus to medicine. He graduated with a doctor of medicine degree in 1780. While at the academy, he began writing his first major play, *The Robbers*. This play dramatized the conflict between two aristocratic brothers. One brother became a bandit in the Bohemian forest, while the other schemed for their father's estate. The play's success made him an overnight sensation.

Schiller's early professional life was marked by both success and struggle. In 1780, he worked as a regimental doctor in Stuttgart. He disliked this position and even faced legal trouble for it. He left his regiment without permission to attend a performance of *The Robbers* in Mannheim. This resulted in a 14-day imprisonment and a ban on publishing. Eventually, he fled Stuttgart in 1782. He traveled through several cities, including Frankfurt and Leipzig, before settling in Weimar. During this time, he also faced difficult financial situations.

In 1789, Schiller reached a new professional peak in Jena. He was appointed a professor of History and Philosophy at the university. During his inaugural lecture, he outlined his views on universal history. He argued that studying history serves a specific moral purpose. While at Jena, he focused heavily on writing historical works. He later returned to Weimar in 1799 to live with his family.

One of the most significant aspects of Schiller's life was his friendship with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. This productive relationship lasted for seventeen years, from 1788 until Schiller's death in 1805. The two men frequently discussed aesthetics, which is the study of beauty and art. Schiller encouraged Goethe to complete various unfinished sketches. Together, they founded the Weimar Theater, which became a leading institution in Germany. They also co-authored *Xenien*, a collection of short satirical poems. This collaboration was a cornerstone of the Weimar Classicism era.
