Learning French involves understanding how it was built over time. It started from Vulgar Latin, which was the common speech of the Roman Empire. In the region of Gaul, this Latin mixed with native Gaulish words. For example, the word for "yes" is "oui" in French. Later, Germanic Frankish invaders added even more words to the mix. These changes helped create Old French and Middle French. Eventually, the Francien dialect became the basis for the Modern French we hear now.
The history of French is filled with many changes and movements. In the north of France, people spoke languages called langues d'oïl. In the south, people spoke different tongues called langues d'oc. During the Crusades, French became a common way to talk in the Mediterranean. This contact brought Arabic words like "alcohol" and "zero" into the language. In the 1600s, leaders like Louis XIV helped make French very important. They even created the Académie française to protect the way the language is used.
Today, French is spoken in about 50 different countries around the globe.

French is a very important tool for many big international groups. It is a working language for the European Union and the United Nations. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the World Trade Organization also use it. Even the International Olympic Committee uses French for its work. About 120 million people were studying the language as of 2017. It has a long history as a language for science and great books. This makes it a bridge between many different cultures and people.
French is a major Romance language belonging to the Indo-European family.
The development of French began with Vulgar Latin in the region of Gaul.
French evolved through several distinct historical stages. The first major stage was Old French, which lasted from the late 8th to the mid-14th century. During this time, a divide existed between the northern "langues d'oïl" and southern "langues d'oc." Old French used a case system to distinguish between different grammatical roles. Next came the Middle French period, spanning the 14th to the 17th centuries. During this stage, the Francien dialect began to thrive and dominate. This dialect eventually became the foundation for the Modern French we use today. Noun declensions were lost during this time as standardized rules emerged.
History shows how French moved from a local dialect to a global power. During the Crusades, French became the lingua franca of the Mediterranean. This period of contact introduced many Arabic loanwords into the language. Words like "amiral" (admiral) and "zero" entered the French vocabulary. In the 17th century, French replaced Latin as the primary language of diplomacy. Leaders like Cardinal Richelieu helped protect the language by founding the Académie française. However, the language's diplomatic dominance began to shift after the Second World War. The Treaty of Versailles was one of the first major diplomatic documents written in both English and French.
The scale of the French-speaking world is immense and diverse. There are approximately 310 million French speakers in the world today. Of these, about 74 million are native speakers. In 2015, the population was spread across several major regions. About 40% of Francophones lived in Europe. Another 36% lived in sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian Ocean. North Africa and the Middle East accounted for 15% of the population. The Americas held 8%, while Asia and Oceania held 1%.
