It sits in the Arctic Ocean. These islands are part of Russia. They are in the far north.

There are 192 islands in this group. Some are very large. Others are quite small. The biggest island is Prince George Land. Most of the islands are covered in ice. This ice is called a glacier. About 85% of the area is glaciated.

Explorers found these islands a long time ago. Norwegian sailors likely saw them in 1865. But others did not know until 1873. An expedition from Austria-Hungary found them. They named the islands after Emperor Franz Joseph I.

Today, no one lives there all the time. Only military personnel stay on the islands. The area is also a nature sanctuary.

It is the northernmost part of the Arkhangelsk Oblast in Russia. This archipelago is made of 192 different islands. These islands spread out across the ocean from east to west. They are also spread out from north to south. The islands are split into three main groups. These are the western, central, and eastern groups. They are separated by the British Channel and the Austrian Strait.

Most of this land is covered in thick ice. About 85% of the archipelago is glaciated. This means huge sheets of ice, called glaciers, cover the ground. Because of all this ice, the islands have a very long coastline. The islands are highly dissected by the ice. This means the ice has carved many shapes into the land. The largest island is called Prince George Land. Other large islands include Wilczek Land, Graham Bell Island, and Alexandra Land.

Many brave explorers tried to find these islands long ago. Norwegian sailors likely saw them first in 1865. However, they did not tell anyone about their discovery. They wanted to keep the secret for sealing and whaling. The first group to announce the find was an Austro-Hungarian expedition in 1873.

They were led by Julius von Payer and Karl Weyprecht. They named the islands after Emperor Franz Joseph I. Later, the Soviet Union took control of the islands in 1926. At that time, they were known as Fridtjof Nansen Land.

Life on the islands has changed many times over the years. During the Cold War, the islands became off limits to foreigners. Two military airfields were built there. In 1937, the number of people staying there for the winter reached 300.

Today, no one lives there permanently. Only military personnel stay on the islands. The islands have also been a nature sanctuary since 1994. In 2012, they became part of the Russian Arctic National Park.

Even in the cold, life finds a way to exist. You can find small living things like the Arctic poppy.

Franz Josef Land is a remote Russian archipelago located in the Arctic Ocean.

It represents the northernmost part of the Arkhangelsk Oblast. The archipelago consists of 192 individual islands that stretch across the ocean from east to west and north to south. These islands are organized into three distinct groups: the western, central, and eastern groups. The British Channel and the Austrian Strait serve as the boundaries that separate these groups. Within the central group, the Markham Sound divides the land into northern and southern sections. This vast collection of islands plays a vital role in understanding the geography of the high Arctic.

The physical landscape of the archipelago is defined by extreme ice coverage. Approximately 85% of the total area is glaciated, meaning it is covered by glaciers. These massive ice sheets have heavily dissected the land over time. This process has created a very high ratio of coastline to total area. Specifically, there are only about 3.6 square kilometers of land for every kilometer of coastline. The largest island in the group is Prince George Land. Other significant islands include Wilczek Land, Graham Bell Island, and Alexandra Land.

The highest elevations are found in the central and eastern groups, with the highest peak located on Wiener Neustadt Island.

Exploration of these islands began with two possible discovery events. In 1865, Norwegian sailors Nils Fredrik Rønnbeck and Johan Petter Aidijärvi likely spotted the land while searching for sealing sites. They did not report the discovery because they wanted to keep the area secret for whaling and sealing. The first official announcement came during the Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition of 1873.

This mission was led by Julius von Payer and Karl Weyprecht on the schooner Tegetthoff. Their primary goal was to find the Northeast Passage. They named the archipelago in honor of Emperor Franz Joseph I. This expedition was essential for the early mapping of the region.

Many famous explorers later used the islands as a base for polar research. In 1896, the explorer Fridtjof Nansen arrived at the islands after traveling by ski. He met Frederick George Jackson at Cape Flora, which was a significant meeting for Arctic history.

Other expeditions faced extreme hardships due to the ice and weather. The Ziegler Polar Expedition of 1901 and the 1903 expedition both struggled with equipment loss and ship damage.

One ship, the America, was even crushed by ice in January 1904. These early travelers provided the first scientific measurements of snow and magnetic field cycles in the area.

The political status of the islands changed throughout the 20th century. In 1926, the Soviet Union annexed the archipelago, which was then known as Fridtjof Nansen Land. The Soviet Union claimed all land between its mainland and the North Pole. This policy, known as the sector principle, was not internationally recognized. Norway and Italy both protested this claim to protect their own economic interests. However, the Soviet Union eventually established permanent bases. By 1937, the winter population of the islands had grown to 300 people.

During the Cold War, the islands became restricted areas for foreigners and saw the construction of military airfields.

Despite the harsh conditions, the archipelago is a site of biological interest. Small plants like the Arctic poppy can be found in the landscape.

Large marine animals, such as walruses, also inhabit the coastal areas.

Because of its unique environment, the archipelago has been a nature sanctuary since 1994. In 2012, it officially became part of the Russian Arctic National Park. This status helps protect the fragile ecosystem from human interference.

Today, Franz Josef Land has no permanent civilian population. It is inhabited only by military personnel who manage the remote outposts. The islands remain a critical point for studying Arctic geography and climate. Cape Fligely on Rudolf Island holds a special distinction as the northernmost point of the Eastern Hemisphere. From the frozen coasts of Bell Island to the high peaks of the central islands, the archipelago remains one of the most extreme environments on Earth.
