Long ago, a big war happened.
Long ago, France and the Dutch fought a big war.
France had a king named Louis. He wanted more land. He sent his army to fight.
The Dutch were not ready. Their land was in danger. This was a very sad time.
A leader named William helped the Dutch. He worked to keep their land safe.
After many years, the two sides made peace. This helped the lands become calm again.
The Franco-Dutch War took place from 1672 to 1678.
France and the Dutch Republic were the main fighters. King Louis XIV of France wanted more land. He used a large army to attack. In 1672, the French nearly took over the Netherlands. The Dutch called this the "Disaster Year."
The Dutch were not ready for the attack. They had spent much money on their navy. This left their land defenses weak.
A leader named William of Orange helped the Dutch. He became the Captain-General, a top military leader.
Other countries joined to help the Dutch. These included Spain and Brandenburg-Prussia. The war lasted for many years. Neither side could win a total victory. In 1678, they signed the Peace of Nijmegen. France gained some land. However, the Dutch kept their own land. This war helped William of Orange become a very powerful leader.
The Franco-Dutch War was a major conflict from 1672 to 1678.
The war began with a sudden French attack. In May 1672, French armies moved into the Netherlands. This was a very difficult time for the Dutch people. They called the year 1672 their "Disaster Year."
France had a very strong and organized military.
On the other side, the Dutch faced many hard jobs.

In the end, neither side won a total victory.
The Franco-Dutch War was a major European conflict from 1672 to 1678.
Before the war, France and the Dutch Republic had been allies. They had even signed an assistance treaty in 1662. However, tensions grew over French expansion into the Spanish Netherlands. King Louis XIV of France decided that force was the best way to reach his goals. He used clever diplomacy to prepare for his invasion. France made a secret agreement with England known as the Treaty of Dover. This treaty promised England £230,000 per year to provide 6,000 soldiers.
The French military was highly organized and very powerful. Louvois, the Secretary of War, introduced important reforms to the army. These reforms helped the French mobilize large field armies very quickly. This allowed them to launch offensives in the early spring before opponents were ready. The French army had a very large number of soldiers. In 1672, it started with 180,000 men. By 1678, the authorized strength reached 219,250 infantry and 60,360 cavalry. Talented generals like Turenne and Condé led these massive forces. They used supply dumps to keep their troops well-equipped during long campaigns.
The Dutch Republic was not prepared for a massive land invasion. They had spent most of their money on their navy. This left their land defenses and forts in a weak state. Many fortifications were barely defendable and short of supplies. Internal politics also caused problems for the Dutch. Supporters of William of Orange refused to approve military spending unless he was appointed Captain-General. This political struggle was led by Johan de Witt, the Grand Pensionary.
The French offensive began in May 1672 and was very successful at first. French forces crossed the Rhine and captured several important towns. They took Rheinberg, Orsoy, and Burick with very little resistance. The town of Wesel also surrendered to the French. This period was so difficult for the Dutch that they called it the Rampjaar, or "Disaster Year."
As the war continued, the situation began to stabilize. The Dutch received support from Emperor Leopold I, Spain, and Brandenburg-Prussia. A coalition formed to stop French gains.
The war ended with the Peace of Nijmegen in September 1678.
