He is widely recognized as the founder of the Lebanese Army. This role began after Lebanon achieved independence from France. Chehab served as the President of Lebanon from 1958 to 1964. His leadership style focused on building modern state institutions and social development. Many people consider his political approach, known as "Chehabism," to be a vital period for the nation. This era focused on modernization and administrative reform through dialogue and moderation.

Chehab's family history was deeply connected to the leadership of Lebanon. He was born in 1902 in Ghazir to Abdallah Chehab and Badiaa Hbeich. The Chehab family was a Maronite Christian dynasty. They had ruled Mount Lebanon under Ottoman rule for many years. His great-grandfather, Hassan Chehab, was the brother of Bashir Shihab II. Bashir Shihab II was a ruler of Lebanon between 1789 and 1840.

This noble lineage provided a strong foundation for his later political life.

His military career began with formal training in the early 20th century. In 1921, he joined the French Military School in Damascus, Syria. He graduated with the rank of lieutenant in 1923. He was later promoted to the rank of captain in 1929. Chehab also studied at the École Supérieure de Guerre in Paris, France, during the 1930s. After Lebanon declared independence in 1943, he became the Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces in 1945. He officially took this command in 1946 as French troops departed.

Chehab played a crucial role during the 1958 Lebanon crisis. This crisis occurred between President Camille Chamoun and various Muslim leaders. During this period of unrest, Chehab made a significant decision regarding the military. He refused to allow the army to side with either the government or the opposition. This choice kept the army unified and helped to limit losses during the conflict. Because he was seen as an impartial figure, he was chosen as a consensus candidate.

He was elected President in 1958 to succeed Chamoun and restore national stability.

As President, Chehab focused on creating a more efficient and modern government. He introduced various reform plans to improve public services. To protect the nation from foreign interference, he founded the "Second Bureau." This was a specialized intelligence and security service. He used these tools to strengthen the state and prevent internal threats. However, his rule was also described as autocratic by some observers. This was because he increased the role of military and intelligence services in Lebanese politics.

Chehab was known for his commitment to democratic principles and limits on power. In 1960, he offered to resign once the country was stable. The Lebanese Parliament persuaded him to stay until his mandate ended in 1964. When his term was nearly over, he refused to change the Constitution. He did not want to allow himself to run for another presidential term. Instead, he supported Charles Helou to succeed him. This decision showed his desire to move away from traditional, clan-based political power.

After leaving the presidency, Chehab continued to influence Lebanese politics. He endorsed Elias Sarkis for the presidency in 1970. The election was one of the closest in Lebanese history. Sarkis lost to Suleiman Frangieh by only a single vote in the National Assembly. This loss marked the end of the Chehabist era of reform. Following this, many of the security services Chehab built were dismantled. This change allowed for more foreign interference in the country's internal affairs.
