Racing has a long history. The first world championship race was in 1950. It was the British Grand Prix. A driver named Juan Manuel Fangio won many titles. He won five championships.

In the 1968 season, aerodynamics became much more important. Colin Chapman of Lotus introduced aerofoils, including front wings and rear spoilers. Later, in the late 1970s, Lotus used ground-effect aerodynamics. This created downforce up to five times the weight of the car. Such high force required extremely stiff springs. This made the suspension almost solid. Drivers then had to rely entirely on tyres for any cushioning from the road.
The history of the championship began in 1950. The first race was the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Giuseppe Farina won the first Drivers' World Championship for Alfa Romeo. Juan Manuel Fangio later set a massive record. He won five championships between 1951 and 1957. His winning percentage of 24 wins in 52 races remains a record. Michael Schumacher later matched the five-title record in 2003 by winning six. 
Engine power also saw dramatic changes. In the 1980s, turbocharged engines became essential for competition. A BMW engine once reached a qualifying pressure of 5.5 bar. This was estimated to be over 5,000 horsepower. To manage these speeds, the FIA eventually limited fuel and boost pressures. They also banned turbocharged engines entirely in 1989. Electronic aids like traction control and active suspension also appeared. However, the FIA banned many of these in the early 1990s. They wanted to ensure driver skill determined the race outcomes. 
Today, Formula One is a massive global business. Bernie Ecclestone helped transform it into a multi-billion dollar industry. In 2017, the Liberty Media Corporation bought the group for roughly $8 billion. The new owners have expanded into new markets. They introduced Grands Prix in Miami, Las Vegas, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the Netherlands. While the sport is expensive, it remains the pinnacle of motorsport. The average annual cost to run a team was approximately $400 million in 2018.
