This can happen in many ways.

In ancient times, many societies used slavery. One type was chattel slavery. In this system, people were treated like property. They could be bought or sold. During the transatlantic slave trade, millions of Black Africans were moved to the Americas.

Other systems were different. Serfdom tied workers to the land they farmed. They could not leave to find new jobs.

In some places, workers were paid with goods instead of cash. This is called a truck system. It often made it hard for workers to pay for what they needed.

In the 20th century, some governments used labour camps. These were places where prisoners were forced to work.

Today, the International Labour Organization says millions of people are still victims. Many of these people are migrant workers who moved far from home.

Forced labour is a very serious issue in our world. It happens when people must work against their will. They are often threatened with harm or being sent to prison. This might even include threats to their families. The International Labour Organization calls it work done under the menace of a penalty.

This type of work is not the same as military service. It also does not include normal civic duties or emergency work. For example, people might work during a flood or an earthquake. These are exceptions to the rule of unfree labour.

There are many different ways that unfree labour can look. One form is chattel slavery, where people are treated like property. They can be bought, sold, or moved by owners. Another form is serfdom, which was common in feudal societies. Serfs were tied to the land they farmed. They could not easily leave to find new jobs.

History shows that forced labour has existed for a very long time. In ancient times, societies like Egypt, Rome, and China used slavery.

A huge event was the transatlantic slave trade from the 16th to the 19th centuries. During this time, between 10 million and 12 million Black Africans were moved to the Americas. In Japan, slavery was officially banned in the late 16th century. However, other types of forced work still happened there. In India, peasants once had to do unpaid work called vetti-chakiri.

During the 20th century, many countries used labour camps for prisoners.

Other groups, like the military of the Empire of Japan, also used forced labour. After the war, about 4 million German prisoners were used for labour. These were very difficult and often sad times in history. These events show how much power can be used to control people.

Today, unfree labour is still a major problem for many people. The International Labour Organization says 27.6 million people are victims every day.

Most of this work is done by private actors rather than governments. About 86% of forced labour is imposed by private groups. Migrant workers are at a much higher risk than others. This is because they are far from home and may face language barriers.

Forced labour, also known as unfree labour, refers to work done against a person's will. This occurs when people are employed through threats of violence, detention, or destitution. These threats can target the workers themselves or their family members. Unfree labour includes many different systems like slavery, serfdom, and penal labour.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) defines it as involuntary service performed under the menace of a penalty.

There are specific exceptions to the ILO definition of forced labour. It does not include compulsory military service laws. It also does not include normal civic obligations in a self-governing country. Work performed as a result of a court conviction is also excluded if it is supervised by a public authority. Finally, work required during emergencies, such as floods, famines, or earthquakes, is not considered forced labour. These exceptions apply when the work is necessary for the well-being of the population.

Unfree labour can take many distinct forms. Chattel slavery is an extreme version where people are legally considered property. Owners can buy, sell, or transfer these individuals for life. Serfdom is another type where workers are bound to the land they farm. Unlike chattel slaves, serfs usually cannot be sold separately from the land. Corvée is a system of regular, unpaid labour imposed on lower social classes. In India, a similar form was known as vetti-chakiri.

Payment methods in unfree labour are often exploitative. If workers receive payment, it may only cover basic subsistence. Sometimes, they are paid in undesirable goods that are hard to exchange. Another method is the truck system, where workers receive tokens or scrip instead of cash. This scrip must be used at company stores owned by the employer. In some cases, payment consists of cancelling a debt that was coerced. This practice is often called debt bondage.

The Empire of Japan also used forced labour during the Pacific War.

Modern statistics show that unfree labour remains a massive global issue. The ILO estimates that 27.6 million people are victims of forced labour every day. A large majority, 86%, of this labour is imposed by private actors. Within this group, 63% occurs in non-sexual sectors and 23% in commercial sexual exploitation. Adult migrant workers face a risk more than three times higher than non-migrant workers. This is because they are often far from home and have different languages or cultures.

The economic impact of this exploitation is significant. The ILO Special Action Programme to Combat Forced Labour estimates global profits from trafficked labour at US$44.3 billion per year. About 70% of this value, or US$31.6 billion, comes from the victims themselves. At least half of this sum, over US$15 billion, comes from industrialised countries. Trafficking involves recruiting or transporting people through force, fraud, or coercion. This is done to subject them to involuntary acts like forced prostitution or labour.
