The February Revolution was a huge turning point in Russian history. It happened in 1917 and changed how the country was ruled. Many people call it the March Revolution today. This is because Russia used a different calendar back then. The revolution was not a single planned event. Instead, it was a series of protests that grew very quickly. It began because many people were unhappy with their lives. This movement eventually ended the long rule of the Russian kings.

At the center of this story was Tsar Nicholas II. He was the leader of the Romanov family. For a long time, his family had ruled Russia. But the Tsar faced many hard choices during the war. He decided to lead the army himself in 1915. This was a hard job that he was not ready for. He also left his wife, Tsarina Alexandra, in charge.

The revolution did not solve all of Russia's problems immediately. The new leaders, like Georgy Lvov, faced many struggles. People were still hungry and many were out of work. Alexander Kerensky later became a leader of the government.

The February Revolution was a massive political upheaval in Russia during 1917.

It was the first of two major revolutions that occurred that year. Many historians call it the March Revolution today. This is because Russia used the Julian calendar at the time. The Gregorian calendar is the one most of the world uses now. The revolution was not a single planned event. Instead, it was a chaotic uprising of people. It fundamentally changed how Russia was governed and ended centuries of royal rule.

The revolution grew out of deep, long-term problems in Russian society. For many years, the country struggled with outdated social and economic structures. The Tsar held absolute power in an autocracy, which is a system with one ruler. However, the world was changing toward capitalism and democratic ideals. Peasants faced harsh treatment from landowners. Industrial workers suffered through very poor working conditions. These tensions created a growing political consciousness among the lower classes. This social division made the country unstable long before the fighting began.

Short-term causes pushed the country toward a breaking point. Russia was fighting in World War I, which started in 1914. The war brought massive military defeats and enormous losses. By early 1917, Russia had suffered about 9.15 million casualties. This included 1.7 million killed and 4.95 million wounded. The economy also struggled under the weight of the war. Railroad networks could not move supplies effectively. This led to food shortages and high inflation. People could not afford basic goods, and bread lines became very long.

Leadership failures made the situation much worse. In 1915, Tsar Nicholas II decided to take personal command of the army. This was a major mistake for several reasons. It linked the monarchy directly to the unpopular war losses. It also meant the Tsar was away from the capital, Petrograd. While he was at the front, his wife, Tsarina Alexandra, ran the government. She was unpopular and relied on a man named Grigori Rasputin. Many people distrusted her influence over government appointments. This lack of stable leadership caused the government to lose the trust of the people.

The revolution itself erupted in Petrograd in late February.

These demonstrations quickly turned into violent clashes with the police. The unrest lasted about eight days. A major turning point happened on February 27. On this day, most of the soldiers in the capital's garrison joined the protesters.

Instead of stopping the crowds, the troops helped them. This left the monarchy with almost no one to defend it.

Following the chaos, a new political structure emerged. A group called the Russian Provisional Government was formed by members of the Duma. The Duma was the lower house of the Russian parliament.

They took control of the telegraphs and railways to secure their power. This prevented loyalist troops from reaching the city by train. Three days later, Tsar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate.

Abdication means he had to give up his throne. This ended the long rule of the Romanov dynasty. Prince Georgy Lvov became the first head of this new government.

The Provisional Government faced many impossible challenges. It had to share power with the Petrograd Soviet, a council of workers and soldiers. The government was also deeply unpopular. It struggled to fix food shortages and mass unemployment. Alexander Kerensky eventually took over the government. However, he tried to keep Russia fighting in World War I. This decision made the public even angrier. These failures eventually led to the October Revolution later that year. That second revolution brought the Bolsheviks to power and led to the formation of the Soviet Union.
