Most blocks move sideways. This is called strike-slip movement. But some blocks move up or down. This makes big changes to the land. Upward movement can make mountains. We call these raised blocks horsts.

Most blocks move in a sideways way. This happens along strike-slip faults. This movement is parallel to the Earth's crust. However, vertical movement creates more dramatic landforms. This means blocks move up or down. This can make mountains, hills, or ridges. It can also make lakes and valleys.

When blocks move up, they form horsts. These are raised blocks of land. When blocks move down, they form grabens. These are low areas. Sometimes the crust stretches or compacts. This causes the blocks to tilt. A tilted block has one steep side. It also has one gentle side.

There are two main types of block mountains. The first type is uplifted blocks. These sit between two faults. They have two steep sides called scarps. The Upper Rhine valley in Europe shows this. It has a graben between two horsts. These are the Vosges mountains in France and the Black Forest in Germany. In Bulgaria, the Rila mountain is a vaulted horst.

The second type is tilted block mountains. These are common in the Basin and Range region. This area is in the western United States. Another type of mountain comes from rifting. Rifting is part of extensional tectonics. The East African Rift zone is a huge system. Death Valley in California is a smaller example. In India, the Narmada River basin is a graben. It sits between the Vindhya and Satpura horsts.

Fault blocks are massive pieces of rock within the Earth's crust. These blocks can stretch across hundreds of kilometers. They form when tectonic and localized stresses break the bedrock. This process divides large areas of rock into distinct sections. Most fault blocks have a uniform lithology, which means they consist of similar types of rock.

Geologists use different names based on the size of these blocks. Very large blocks are called crustal blocks. If a crustal block breaks away from a tectonic plate, it is called a terrane. Some terranes are so large they span the full thickness of the lithosphere. Scientists call these specific terranes microplates. Even larger blocks can reach the size of continents. These are known as microcontinents, continental ribbons, H-blocks, extensional allochthons, or outer highs.

Movement between these blocks usually follows two different directions. Most tectonic stress causes horizontal movement. This occurs parallel to the Earth's crust along strike-slip faults.

However, vertical movement creates much more dramatic changes to the landscape. When blocks move up or down, they create landforms like mountains, hills, ridges, lakes, and valleys. This vertical displacement is often caused by the stretching or compaction of the crust. This stretching can also cause the blocks to tilt rather than stay level.

There are two primary ways that block mountains form. The first type consists of uplifted blocks located between two faults. These mountains have two steep sides known as scarps. This creates a pattern of raised areas and dropped areas. The raised blocks are called horsts. The dropped blocks are called grabens.

The second type of mountain is a tilted block. These are controlled mainly by a single fault. A tilted block has one steep side and one gently sloping side.

We can see these patterns in many famous places around the world. In Europe, the Upper Rhine valley is a graben. It sits between two horsts: the Vosges mountains in France and the Black Forest in Germany. Bulgaria also shows these features in Southeast Europe. The Rila-Rhodope Massif contains several types of horsts. The Belasitsa is a linear horst. The Rila mountain is a vaulted, domed-shaped horst. The Pirin mountain is a massive anticline horst located between the Struma and Mesta graben valleys.

Other regions show the power of tilting and rifting. The Basin and Range region in the western United States is famous for tilted block mountains.

Rifting, which is part of extensional tectonics, also creates fault-block mountains. This can form massive rift valley systems like the East African Rift zone.
