These cards help a computer do many different tasks. For example, a card can help a computer show pictures. Other cards can add more memory. Some cards let a computer talk to many tools at once. You can even add a card to help with science work.
In the past, computers were very large. They used big cards that filled up tall cabinets. 


An expansion card is a special circuit board used to grow a computer's abilities. 

To work, the card must connect to the computer's main board, called a motherboard. The card has metal contacts on one edge called an edge connector. 
Computer history shows how these boards have changed over time. Early vacuum-tube computers were very large and filled entire cabinets. 
Many different types of slots and connections have been made. IBM introduced the ISA bus with the IBM PC in 1981. Later, the PCI bus arrived in 1991 to replace it. In 2005, PCI Express began replacing both PCI and AGP. 

Expansion cards connect to many things you might already know. Some cards act like "daughterboards" that plug into even larger boards. 
An expansion card, also known as an adapter or peripheral card, is a printed circuit board used to extend a computer's capabilities. 

The mechanism of an expansion card relies on establishing a reliable electrical connection. One edge of the card features metal contacts known as an edge connector or pin header. When the card is inserted into a slot, these contacts bridge the gap between the card and the motherboard. This connection allows electricity and data to flow between the central processor and the new hardware. In some computer cases, the motherboard and slots are arranged in a way that requires a riser card. A riser card is a separate board that allows expansion cards to sit parallel to the motherboard. This design helps save space within the computer case while still providing necessary slots.
Expansion cards can take several different physical forms depending on their purpose. Most commonly, they are standalone boards that plug directly into a motherboard. Some designs use "daughterboards," which are smaller cards that plug into connectors on a larger supporting system board. 

The history of expansion technology moved from massive cabinets to small, integrated circuits. Early vacuum-tube computers were modular, but their peripheral functions filled entire large cabinets rather than single boards. 

IBM played a massive role in shaping expansion standards through the PC lineage. In 1981, the IBM PC introduced the Industry Standard Architecture, or ISA bus. This was originally called the PC bus. The technology evolved with the IBM XT in 1983 and the IBM AT in 1984. The AT used a second connector to extend the address and data bus, but it remained backward compatible with 8-bit cards. Users of the ISA bus often had to manually configure hardware using DIP switches or jumpers. 
As computing progressed, new standards emerged to provide higher speeds and better efficiency. The Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) bus was introduced in 1991 to replace the aging ISA standard. Intel launched PCI chipsets alongside Pentium CPUs in 1993. Later, Intel introduced the AGP bus in 1997 as a dedicated solution for video acceleration. Since 2005, PCI Express has been the dominant standard, replacing both PCI and AGP. PCI Express is unique because it implements the PCI protocol over a serial communication interface using high-speed "lanes." For portable devices like laptops, smaller standards were developed. These include PC Cards, CardBus, and ExpressCard. Some laptops even include a single internal slot for Mini-PCI or Mini PCIe to add wireless networking or a GPU.
Modern connectivity has even moved beyond internal slots to external expansion. The Thunderbolt 3 connector, introduced by Intel in December 2015, is a powerful example.
