Most excavators use three hydraulic pumps to manage this power. Two main pumps supply high-pressure oil, reaching up to 5000 psi (345 bar), to the arms and motors. A third, lower-pressure pump provides about 700 psi (48 bar) for pilot control. This third circuit makes the controls much easier for the operator to move with less physical effort.

Every excavator is built from three primary sections: the undercarriage, the house, and the arm. The undercarriage is the base that includes the tracks or wheels and the final drives.

The house is the rotating platform that sits on the undercarriage via a center pin. It contains the engine, fuel tanks, hydraulic oil tanks, and the operator's cab. Because of a hydraulic swivel at the axis of the pin, the house can slew, or rotate, a full 360 degrees. The arm is the part that actually performs the digging. It is composed of three connected parts: the boom, the stick, and the bucket.

The arm's movements depend on the specific configuration of its parts. The boom is the first section attached to the house and provides up-and-down movement. Some machines use a mono boom, which only moves straight up and down. Others use a knuckle boom that can move left and right, or a triple-articulated boom (TAB) that has an extra joint in the middle. Attached to the boom is the stick, also known as the dipper arm. The stick provides the pulling motion needed to move the bucket through the soil. Operators can choose longer sticks to increase reach or shorter sticks to increase break-out power.

At the very end of the arm is the bucket, which comes in many different shapes. A large, wide mud bucket with a straight edge is used for leveling soft material. A general-purpose (GP) bucket is smaller and stronger, featuring hardened teeth and side cutters to break through rocks.

Beyond simple digging, excavators can use many different attachments. These include hydraulic claws, breakers, cutters, augers, and even saws for brush cutting. Some machines in Scandinavia use a tiltrotator, which allows the attachment to rotate 360 degrees and tilt by 45 degrees for extreme precision.
