As North America merged with Africa, the Florida Platform became a shallow marine environment. Over time, layers of calcium carbonate, sand, and shells compressed into limestone. 
Several distinct geologic formations shape the southern Florida landscape. The Tamiami Formation consists of highly permeable sands and quartz. Below Lake Okeechobee lies the Caloosahatchee Formation, which is composed of sandy shell marl and clay. The Fort Thompson Formation is made of dense, hard limestone and sand. Near metropolitan areas, the Anastasia Formation contains shelly limestone and coquina. The Miami Limestone is particularly important because it is highly porous. This limestone stores water during the dry season and influences which plants can grow.
Human history in this region spans at least 15,000 years. Long before European colonization, the Calusa and Tequesta tribes inhabited the area. During the early 19th century, the Seminole people moved into the Everglades during the Seminole Wars. They assimilated other groups and created a new culture while resisting removal by the U.S. Army. In the 1800s, migrants proposed draining the land for plantations. By the mid-20th century, massive engineering projects changed the landscape forever. 
In the 20th century, human development significantly altered the ecosystem. Many canals were built to spur the South Florida economy and support land development. In 1947, Congress formed the Central and Southern Florida Flood Control Project. This project utilized levees and water control devices to manage flooding. As the Miami metropolitan area grew, Everglades water was diverted to supply cities. Consequently, about 50 percent of the original Everglades has been lost to urban or agricultural use. Much of this land is now used for sugarcane farming. 
Today, conservation efforts focus on restoring the natural balance of the region. In the 1970s, environmental groups began paying closer attention to the ecosystem. The Everglades was eventually designated as a Wetland Area of Global Importance by UNESCO. In 2000, Congress approved the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan. This was considered the most expensive and comprehensive restoration attempt in history. Efforts include removing canals to allow rivers like the Kissimmee to flow naturally again. 
The health of the Everglades is directly connected to the quality of life in South Florida. Poor water quality in Lake Okeechobee can impact urban areas. Furthermore, the Everglades helps replenish the Biscayne Aquifer. This aquifer is a primary source of fresh water for the Miami metropolitan area. By protecting the wetlands, people also protect their own water supply. The struggle to balance development with sustainability remains a major challenge for the region.
