A warren is a large network of burrows they dig in the ground. They live in social groups led by females. Female rabbits leave the warren to make nests for their young. In 1758, a biologist named Carl Linnaeus first named them. Later, in 1874, Wilhelm Lilljeborg put them in their own group called a genus. The scientific name is Oryctolagus cuniculus. This name comes from words meaning "burrowing hare."

There are two main types, called subspecies. One is the common rabbit, and the other is the Iberian rabbit. The Iberian rabbit is found in Portugal and southern Spain. It is usually smaller than the common rabbit. These two groups may have split apart two million years ago.

It is important to watch how rabbit populations change.

There are two recognized subspecies of the European rabbit. The first is the common rabbit, or Oryctolagus cuniculus cuniculus.

This subspecies is widespread and has been introduced to hundreds of islands and many continents. The second is the Iberian rabbit, or Oryctolagus cuniculus algirus.

This subspecies is native to Portugal and southern Spain. It is generally smaller than the common rabbit. It also shows more pronounced reverse sexual dimorphism, where females may be larger or more distinct in appearance. Scientists believe these two lineages diverged roughly 2 million years ago during the Quaternary glaciation.

Taxonomy, or the science of naming and classifying life, has changed for this species over time. In 1758, the biologist Carl Linnaeus originally placed rabbits in the genus Lepus.

However, in 1874, zoologist Wilhelm Lilljeborg moved them to their own genus, Oryctolagus. He noted they were different from hares because of their unique burrowing habits and their altricial young. The name Oryctolagus comes from Greek words meaning "burrowing hare." Throughout history, many different subspecies names were used, but modern genetic studies have simplified this. Today, most scientists recognize only the two main subspecies mentioned above.

Humans have had a long relationship with the European rabbit. Evidence shows they have been hunted since the Paleolithic period.

Others have introduced them to exotic locations for sport hunting or as a food supply.

While they are useful to humans, rabbits can also be an invasive species. When they are introduced to new areas without natural predators, they can cause massive changes to the environment. They can impact local biodiversity by competing with native animals for food. Conversely, in their native ranges, their populations are currently listed as near threatened by the IUCN.

This decline is caused by overhunting, habitat loss, and diseases like myxomatosis or rabbit haemorrhagic disease.

These population changes create a ripple effect through entire ecosystems. Many predators rely heavily on the European rabbit for food. For example, the Iberian lynx and the Spanish imperial eagle depend on them to survive.
