Managing this money is a very big and serious job. The European Central Bank, or ECB, is in charge of the euro.
The euro is a major global currency used across much of Europe. It serves as the official money for 21 member states of the European Union. This specific group of countries is known as the eurozone.
The euro is managed through a complex administrative system. The European Central Bank, or ECB, is located in Frankfurt, Germany.

Most countries joined the euro through the 1992 Maastricht Treaty. This treaty required members to meet specific monetary and budgetary convergence criteria. Some countries have different rules. Denmark negotiated an opt-out to keep its own currency, the krone. However, the krone is pegged to the euro through the ERM II exchange rate mechanism. Sweden also turned down the euro in a 2003 referendum. Other nations have joined the EU since 1993 and pledged to adopt the euro eventually. These countries must still meet certain requirements before they can switch.

Banknotes are also highly standardized but feature artistic themes. The first series of banknotes was designed by Robert Kalina.

There are different series of banknotes in use. The second series is known as the Europa series. This series includes six denominations. The €500 note was discontinued from issuance in April 2019. However, both the first and second series remain legal tender.
The euro plays a massive role in the global economy. There is more than €1.3 trillion in circulation today. This is one of the highest combined values of banknotes and coins in the world. The currency's value often fluctuates against the US dollar. For example, the two currencies briefly hit parity in July 2022. This happened partly due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In the ten years ending September 30, 2025, the exchange rate averaged about $1.00 to €0.92.
