A giant dam sits on a river.

The dam helps make power for homes. It also helps water the farms. The water behind the dam made a huge lake. It is the biggest lake in the land.
People worked hard to build it. Many workers from Syria and Russia helped. They worked on it for many years.
Before the lake grew, people found old things. They dug up very old sites. They wanted to save them from the water.
This dam is a very big part of the land.
The Euphrates Dam is a very large dam in Syria.

Workers built the dam between 1968 and 1973. They had help from the Soviet Union. Up to 12,000 Syrians and 900 Russian experts worked there. The dam has two main jobs. It makes hydroelectric power, which is power from moving water. It also helps water farms on both sides of the river. The dam created a huge lake called Euphrates Lake. This is the largest lake in Syria.
Before the lake filled up, many people worked to save history. They did rescue excavations. This means they dug up old sites to save them. They did not want the rising water to hide them forever. One special place is Qal'at Ja'bar. It is a castle on a hill. The new lake turned the castle into an island.
Building the dam was not always easy. In 1974, Syria and Iraq had a big fight. Iraq was worried they would not get enough river water. Saudi Arabia and the Soviet Union helped them make a deal. This deal helped the water flow again.
The Euphrates Dam is a huge structure in Syria.

The dam works in a few important ways. One way is by making hydroelectric power. This is power made by using moving water. The power station has eight Kaplan turbines. These turbines can spin at 125 RPM. Each one can potentially make 103 MW of power. The dam also helps with irrigation. This means it sends water to farms on both sides of the river. The dam is an earth-fill dam. It is long, high, and wide at the base. It sits on a spot where rocky outcrops are less than 1 km apart.
Building the dam took many years of hard work. Construction started in 1968 and ended in 1973. The Soviet Union helped Syria with the project. They provided technical expertise and a $100 million loan. The total cost to build the dam was $340 million. During the work, 12,000 Syrians and 900 Russian technicians worked together. They lived in a town that grew much larger near the site. This town was later renamed Al-Thawrah or Tabqa. The power station was finished on March 8, 1978.
Before the water rose, experts worked to save history.

The dam has also faced many difficult times. In 1974, Syria and Iraq had a big disagreement. Iraq was worried because they were getting much less water. The flow dropped from 1,100 cubic meters per second to 400. Saudi Arabia and the Soviet Union helped them reach a deal. Later, the dam was involved in fighting during wars. In 2017, bombs hit the dam during a military operation. This caused equipment to fail and stopped the dam from working. Engineers had to make emergency repairs to keep the dam from failing.
The Euphrates Dam, often called the Tabqa Dam, is a massive embankment dam in Syria.
To understand how the dam works, we must look at its physical design and its power station. The dam is an earth-fill dam, meaning it is constructed using compacted earth and rock. It is long, high, and wide at both its base and its top. It was built in a location where rocky outcrops on either side of the valley are less than 1 kilometer apart. On the southern end of the dam sits a hydroelectric power station. This station uses eight Kaplan turbines to generate electricity. A turbine is a machine with blades that spins when water flows through it. These turbines can spin at a rate of 125 RPM, or revolutions per minute. Each turbine has the potential to produce 103 MW, which stands for megawatts, a unit of power. In total, the station was designed to produce 880 MW of power.
Building such a large structure required a massive international effort and significant funding. The total cost to construct the dam was US$340 million. The Soviet Union provided technical expertise and a loan of US$100 million. Construction took place between 1968 and 1973. During this time, a large workforce was required to complete the project. Up to 12,000 Syrians and 900 Russian technicians worked on the dam. They lived in a town near the construction site that was greatly expanded. This town was eventually renamed Al-Thawrah, or Tabqa. While the dam was finished in 1973, the power station was not completed until March 8, 1978.
Before the rising waters of Euphrates Lake could submerge the valley, a major scientific effort began.

The dam has also been at the center of important political and environmental discussions. In 1974, as Syria began filling the reservoir, the flow of the river was reduced. This caused a major dispute with Iraq, which is located downstream. Iraq saw its annual Euphrates flow drop from 1,100 cubic meters per second in 1973 to only 400 cubic meters per second in 1975.
In more recent years, the dam has faced significant challenges due to conflict. In 2013, the dam was captured by the Syrian opposition. Later, in 2014, it was captured by the Islamic State. During military operations in March 2017, the dam's towers were struck by bombs. This caused critical equipment to fail and stopped the dam from functioning. To prevent a catastrophic failure that could have flooded areas over 100 miles downstream, engineers had to perform emergency repairs. This required an unusual ceasefire between several fighting groups to allow the work to happen.
The Euphrates Dam remains a central part of the region's water and power systems. Even with its history of conflict, it is linked to other structures in the valley. For example, the Mansoura Dam was completed in 1986 downstream to help control floodwaters. The Tishrin Dam was also built to provide more hydroelectric power. These dams together manage the flow and energy of the Euphrates River. The dam continues to be a vital, though complex, piece of Syrian infrastructure.
