Scientists identify Erebidae moths by looking at the veins in their wings. A specific vein called the cubital vein runs from the base of the wing to the outer edge. In most Erebidae, this vein splits into four branches. This pattern is known as a quadrifid forewing and a quadrifine hindwing. The branches are named M2, M3, CuA1, and CuA2. However, the Micronoctuini tribe is an exception to this rule. Their hindwings are bifine, meaning the vein splits into only two branches.

This family contains many different groups, known as subfamilies. There are currently 18 subfamilies within Erebidae. Some well-known groups include the Arctiinae, which are called tiger, lichen, or wasp moths. Another group is the Lymantriinae, known as tussock moths. The Erebinae include the underwing moths, while the Herminiinae are called litter moths. Other subfamilies include the Calpinae, which are known as piercing moths.

Each group has unique ways of living and eating. Most larvae, or caterpillars, are herbivorous and eat various plants. However, some groups have very different diets. Lithosiini larvae eat algae and lichens, which is why they are called lichen moths. Herminiinae larvae feed on dead or withered leaves instead of living ones. Some adult moths have a specialized proboscis, which is a straw-like mouthpart. Calpinae and some Erebinae use this to pierce the skin of fruit to suck out juice. A few species, called vampire moths, can even pierce mammalian skin to drink blood.

The larvae also show great variety in their physical forms. Many larvae have a smooth appearance. In contrast, the Arctiinae and Lymantriinae larvae are very hairy. These hairy caterpillars are often called woolly bears. The way they move also depends on their legs. Some have fully developed prolegs, which are extra legs used for gripping. Other subfamilies have reduced or absent prolegs. This is an adaptation that helps them live on trees as semi-loopers.

Our understanding of Erebidae has changed due to new scientific studies. In the past, many of these moths were classified in the family Noctuidae. Morphological studies, which look at physical shapes, led to this older grouping. However, recent phylogenetic studies have changed everything. These studies combine physical traits with genetic characteristics to see how species are truly related. Researchers discovered that the old Noctuidae group was paraphyletic, meaning it did not include all its descendants. This discovery caused scientists to rearrange many groups into the current Erebidae family.

This new classification system moved several groups to better reflect their true relationships. For example, the Arctiinae and Lymantriinae were moved into Erebidae because they are closely related to other members. The Micronoctuini were changed from a full family to a tribe within the Hypenodinae. While some of the 18 subfamilies are strongly supported by these genetic studies, others are still being studied. This ongoing research helps scientists map out the complex history of life within the Noctuoidea superfamily.
