Even music theorists like Vincenzo Galilei used empirical methods. He solved complex problems regarding pitch and volume through observation and experiment.

In the modern era, empiricism is a fundamental part of the scientific method. Science relies on empirical research, which includes experiments and validated measurement tools. This method requires that all hypotheses and theories be tested against observations of the natural world. Scientists do not rely solely on intuition, revelation, or a priori reasoning. A priori reasoning refers to knowledge that is independent of experience. Instead, science treats knowledge as something that is tentative and probabilistic.
