He is credited with leading the first constitutional republic in Asia. While he is a national hero in the Philippines, his leadership was also marked by internal conflict. His father, Carlos Aguinaldo y Jamir, served as a Gobernadorcillo. This was a municipal governor position within the Spanish administration. Emilio grew up in a well-to-do family and was raised Roman Catholic. He attended the Colegio de San Juan de Letran. However, a cholera outbreak in 1882 prevented him from finishing his studies. Before the revolution, he held local leadership roles. At age 25, he became the first Gobernadorcillo Capitan Municipal of Cavite el Viejo.

His path to revolution began through secret organizations. In 1895, he joined the Freemasons under the name "Colon." Shortly after, Santiago Alvarez encouraged him to join the Katipunan. The Katipunan was a secret group led by Andrés Bonifacio. Its goal was to gain independence from Spain through armed force. Aguinaldo joined using the nom de guerre "Magdalo."

These victories were seen as major successes against a colonial power.

As the war progressed, the revolutionary government underwent changes. In February 1897, Spanish forces launched a powerful offensive. Major General Jose de Lachambre led 23,000 troops to reclaim towns in Cavite. On March 22, 1897, the Tejeros Convention was held to reorganize the government.

Aguinaldo's leadership spanned three distinct conflicts. First, he led forces against Spain during the Philippine Revolution from 1896 to 1898. Second, he was involved in the Spanish–American War in 1898. Finally, he led the resistance against the United States during the Philippine–American War from 1899 to 1901.
