Elijah was a famous prophet in the ancient kingdom of Israel. A prophet is a person who shares messages from a divine being.

Elijah's life involved many amazing things. One story tells of a widow in the town of Zarephath. Her son died, but Elijah prayed for him. The boy came back to life. This is the first time the Bible describes raising the dead. Another story says God sent fire from the sky. This fire burned up an offering on an altar.
History tells us that Elijah lived in the northern kingdom of Israel. At that time, King Ahab and Queen Jezebel were in charge. They encouraged people to worship a god named Baal. Baal was a Canaanite god of rain and lightning. Elijah challenged this by defending the worship of Yahweh. He wanted the people to follow the Hebrew religious laws. This caused a lot of tension between the king and the prophet. Elijah was also known as "the Tishbite."
One of the most famous events happened on Mount Carmel. Elijah held a test to see which god was real. He and the prophets of Baal each prepared a bull. The prophets of Baal prayed all day, but nothing happened. Elijah built an altar with twelve stones for the tribes of Israel. He even poured water on his altar. Then, fire fell from the sky to consume the offering. This showed the people that Yahweh was the true God.
Elijah's story connects to many other religious traditions. In the New Testament, he appears with Moses during a special event.
Elijah was a significant prophet and miracle worker in the ancient northern kingdom of Israel.
Elijah's ministry took place during the reign of King Ahab.
During the drought, Elijah experienced several miraculous events. While hiding by the brook Chorath, he was fed by ravens. Later, he stayed with a widow in the town of Zarephath. Elijah promised her that her supply of flour and oil would not run out. This promise came true miraculously. In another event, the widow's son died. Elijah prayed for the boy, and the child was revived. This is noted as the first instance of raising the dead in Scripture.
One of the most famous episodes is the confrontation on Mount Carmel. Elijah challenged the 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah. He proposed a test to see which deity could answer with fire.
Following this, Elijah faced intense pressure from Queen Jezebel. He fled to the wilderness and eventually traveled to Mount Horeb.
Elijah's departure from Earth is also described as a miracle. The Bible states he ascended to heaven alive.

Today, Elijah remains a figure of great significance in several major religions. In Judaism, his name is invoked during the weekly Havdalah rite. He is also remembered during the Passover Seder and the brit milah.
