He earned a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Vienna in 1929. However, he did not pursue a career in science.

Instead, Canetti focused on philosophy and literature. He became part of the literary circles in Vienna. He was politically left-leaning during this time. In 1927, he witnessed the July Revolt.
