He did this using bones and eggs found in the ground. By 1890, people in English-speaking places began calling them elephant birds.

There are several different types of elephant birds. Scientists recognize species like Aepyornis maximus and Mullerornis modestus.

Aepyornis maximus was the largest, with mass estimates ranging from 450 to 840 kilograms. Aepyornis hildebrandti was also quite large, while Mullerornis modestus was much smaller and less robust. Some researchers once proposed a genus called Vorombe to describe the largest remains, but genetic evidence suggests these were likely just very large females of Aepyornis maximus.

Research into these birds has evolved over several centuries. In the 1640s, Étienne de Flacourt, a French governor, wrote about a giant ostrich-like bird in Madagascar. Between 1830 and 1840, European travelers discovered massive eggshells on the island. In 1851, Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire officially described the genus Aepyornis to the Paris Academy of Sciences. He used bones and eggs found in alluvial deposits, which are layers of soil left by flowing water. By 1890, the English name "elephant bird" became common usage.

One surprising discovery involves eggs found far from Madagascar. Two whole eggs were discovered in dune deposits in southern Western Australia. One was found in the 1930s at Scott River, and another was found in 1992 at Cervantes. Both were identified as Aepyornis maximus.

Scientists hypothesize that these eggs floated from Madagascar to Australia on the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. This idea is supported by other instances where eggs have washed ashore far from their origin.

Genetic studies have changed how we understand the evolution of these birds. Elephant birds are palaeognaths, a group that includes ratites like the ostrich and emu. DNA sequencing shows that the New Zealand kiwi is their closest living relative. This was a major discovery because the two groups diverged about 54 million years ago during the early Eocene epoch. It suggests that flightlessness did not happen once on the ancient continent of Gondwana. Instead, different bird lineages likely evolved flightlessness independently through convergent evolution.

Elephant birds likely lived very different lives than many modern birds. Brain studies of Aepyornis maximus and A. hildebrandti show reduced optic lobes. This suggests they had a nocturnal lifestyle, meaning they were active at night.
