Venizelos was a leader of the Liberal Party. He worked to modernize Greek society through political and economic reforms. His leadership changed the country's orientation from the East toward the West.

Venizelos' political career began on the island of Crete. At that time, Crete was under Ottoman rule. He was a prominent figure in the 1897 Cretan Revolt.

During this revolt, he led rebels at a place called Akrotiri. This event became a central part of his political legend. He later led the Theriso revolt in 1905. He also helped secure the autonomy of the Cretan State. Eventually, his efforts helped the island join with Greece.

In 1909, Venizelos was invited to Athens to help solve a political deadlock. He became Prime Minister and began a period of intense reform. He introduced the transformative 1911 Constitution to modernize the government. He also worked to rebuild the Greek Army and the Greek Navy. These military improvements prepared Greece for future conflicts. His diplomatic skills allowed him to join the Balkan League. This was an alliance of Balkan states formed to oppose the Ottoman Empire.

This success nearly doubled the country's land area and its population. During World War I, he brought Greece onto the side of the Allies. This decision further expanded the borders of the Greek nation.

However, his foreign policy caused a deep internal conflict. This period is known as the National Schism of the 1910s.

Venizelos supported the Allies, but King Constantine I wanted to remain nonaligned. This disagreement created an unofficial civil war between two factions. One faction was the pro-Venizelos northern provisional government. The other was the pro-royal government in Athens. This struggle polarized the Greek population for many decades.

After the Allied victory in World War I, Venizelos pursued the "Megali Idea." This was a plan to unite all Greek-speaking people under one banner. He sought territorial concessions in Western Anatolia and Thrace.

Venizelos returned to active politics with a landslide victory in 1928.
